Loose Motor Mount

Hey everyone I know this has been brought up in the past but have not seen it in a while. I was riding the bike home today and kept hearing a squeek from what I thought was the front end. When I got home I shut down the bike and started shaking the bike and it sounded like it was coming from the ignition cover area. I checked all the fasteners everything was tight my last check was the upper motor mount and it was loose I got a full turn on the nut. I checked it in the spring and have only put about 1500 miles on it since. I am thinking about changing the nut and going with something with a better locking feature on it. Anyway thought I would pass it on

Yeah, that's a good tip, eaglekeeper. You gotta pay attention when you hear a strange squeek develop. Here's what I found squeeking, on a K-9 I rented a coupla years ago. The brake disk screws had backed out enough to erode a channel right into the strut.

P8riot that was my first thought I remember reading about a loose front brake and all the way home I was thinking I bet that was what I was hearing. But the brake was fine and that upper mount was the culprit.

It's hard to tell where the sound is coming from when it's dark and you're dodging rain squalls, puddles, and lightening bolts. But the next morning, it was a bit of a shock.

Whats stronger than Red? Mig Weld?

I am going to do a little research on a better self locking nut. It seems like the neoprene seal they use is just not hacking it. I will let you all know how I make out.

They make a green loctight that will need alot of heat to get it off, or they make a nut called crimp nut. You dont have to crimp it, it has a square reccess on the the flat side of the nut. I think the smashed a little to keep them from backing off.

I've posted it on here several times. Replace your upper motor mount bolts that bolt to the heads with bolts that are 1/4" to 1/2" longer. Loctite them in and they won't loosen up again.

Good advise Raywood..
Be aware there is a number of grades of red loctite.
Some are just for vibration and can be loosened with hand tools and some red loctite will take nothing short of heat to melt down the polymers to remove it with air assisted tools or some big ass breaker bars..
All "red" loctite is not the same.

My front brake mount flat head screws (screwed into the fork tube) kept coming loose. I used Red Loctite #271 on mine and it's been fine for over a year. Needs to be heated to 500 degrees to get it loose.

Yeah Green loctite is the strongest out.

And I did Ray's longer bolt mod... still have had to tighten them though.

P8RIOT. It's been a while since I have seen that photo and it gives me the squirts everytime I see it. When I bought my '05 Ridge, 5 days after I took it home I was informed about the rear allens backing out on the rear hub assembly. It never happened as of yet. However, I have had the top motor mount bolt back out on me several times. I clean the threads with carb cleaner, apply red loctite, and it still backs out. Thank goodness for Auto Zones, and Advance Auto Parts Stores. It's amazing how bad the bike will run with a loose top motor mount bolt...

it's a threaded mount, not a through bolt with nut.

Mine had one of those stupid aluminum cone nuts on the top engine mount bolt. needless to say it backed off when the vibration wore the threads out. I put a very good lock nut on it with red loctite and then dressed that off with a chrome cap from Hottoppers and have never had an issue since. Yea it will definitely let you know when it's loose. Been there and done that.
