Looking at '09 K9 w/mods

As the title says, I'm considering purchasing a '09 K9 w/ 5000 miles that has a carburetor. It has a dual runner intake, V&H big rad. pipes, and a performance cam but not sure which one. I'm guessing S&S 585 or 600 cam. The owner said it dyno'd 120HP, but has no dyno sheet. I'm not concerned with peak horsepower anyway, but more concerned about reliability with these mods. I've put 30K miles on my Buell so I'm decent on working on my own stuff, but don't want to get into a set-up that has been known to fail. I know in most cases, you don't get something for nothing, so I was wondering if I should look for a stock bike or will a bike with these mods prove to be reliable. The owner did say he has been told the carb needs "calibrated" as he said it acts like its starving for fuel around 75mph, but other than that it runs great.
Thanks.

I would think someone would rejet the carb when doing the mods you list. It sounds like that's what needs to be done, especially with the added airflow.

The owner telling you the carb needs to be "calibrated" makes me suspicious as to whether a cam upgrade was preformed on the bike. No dyno report draws further suspicion. I'm guessing the intake and exhaust are the actual mods preformed. However, I may be wrong.....

I'm sure those more knowledgeable on this will comment...

Have it checked out by someone if you have concerns. Nothing worse then ending up with something that isn't running right. How is the price? If you get a really good deal, then it might be worth the risk.

I'm with Rabbit, I'm willing to bet an Intake and Exhaust he put on him self. The "performance cam" he speaks of is just the stock cam. Hell it's a performance engine out of the box! Mine has a performance cam too! It's the stock one from S&S :D

Ask him where he got it dyno'd, and ask him what shop did the servicing 500 Mile etc. If he doesn't have records they should have them. 5k miles is not much barely broken in.

He probably never messed with the jets and tried covering up the carb issue using the accelerator pump, or just a shop that didn't give a shit did it. Take it home rejet it and ride the hell out of it.

I have a 09 K-9 with port and polished heads, increased compression, 600 cam, S&S Dual Runner, FSD exhaust and Super G using .32 Int & .76 Main jets with 5200 miles. It runs like a scalded cat and sounds awesome. No reliabilty issues at all...knock on wood.

Wow, so many replies in a short amount of time. I should've mentioned he says he has paperwork documenting the cam upgrade was done at the factory (S&S or dealer??). The present owner is currently the second owner of the bike. The original owner is who did all the mods and the dyno runs. The current owner has only had it a year and has done nothing but ride it and change the oil. I agree, those mods should warrant rejetting, maybe the carb just needs cleaned. He wants $18K for it and says its super clean. Sound reasonable?
Thanks for all the input!

18K isn't an unreasonable asking price for an 09, if it's in mint shape. Especially with the mods that's been done. High list (Mint Condition) is $19,485 while the low shows $14,810. You can always talk him down a bit seeing how the economy is today. Anyways, there are your list prices to work with. Good luck with the purchase ...:2thumbs:
