1. I just received my Big Dog Service Manual today...It makes reference to Loctite #2440, Loctite #2760 and #222 w/ 7649. Whats the difference? Is it simply red and blue?

2. Is Loctite any better than the Permatex products?

3. Has anyone tried the Permatex Blue in gel form?

Thanks,
Al

I use Loctite at work all of the time. The color of the locktite can be misleading to people that don't use it often. I strongly suggest to use what they recomend because they all have a certain bonding strength. Don't judge the Locktite by its color.

As for the Peratex - don't care for it to much. But then again, Everyone has there own preference.

Alicat,

2440 is Medium strenght and does not require the use of Primer (typical called known as Blue). It is used on items that require routine disassembly (Motor Mounts, brake caliber mounts, etc).

2760 is known as Red but is used for high strength and not general used on items that require occasional disassembly. (wheel hubs, drive gear, etc). It is also does not require the use of a primer

222 (called Purple many times) is very low strength and is designed to be used with a primer (7649). It is used for small screws such as carb screws.

Recommend that you check the manual for the specific applications for the screws.

Hope this helps and keep in mind that all of it requires good clean threads on the bolt/screw and the female threads of the blind hole, hole or nut. I like brakeklean for getting the threads clean.

You know this thread got me thinking about Loctite and the use on the motorcycle. In particular some of the issues with stuff coming loose.

As many of us know, Loctite is commonly refered to by it's color. However Oscar brings up a very good point, the color can misleading if not used to it.

So with that in mind, I wonder how may people grab a tube of say Blue Loctite but the actuall product number is 243 and not 2440. The 243 requires the use of a primer where the 2440 is primerless. Both are blue and medium strength.

The same goes for the Red, 2760 is primerless where 262, 271, 272, 277 are also red with some requiring primer. There is also difference in their strengths and how hard they are to remove. In such that some Red will come off with regular hand tools and a good arm, other will require some heat and god forbid, some will require just short of a blow torch and a cheater bar.

Point being that when we put our loctite on the bolts, are we sure we are using the right one and that we are not using ones designed for primers without the primer and possibly leading to loosening of the bolts, screws, etc where they shouldn't.

Next time you look at your loctite, see what type it is and make sure you are using it properly and for the right applications.

Just my 2 cents.

Now that you mention it, it is ironic since so many prefer to their loctite by color and most all of it comes in Red Bottle of one form or another, be it the blue, green purple, red etc.

Yep, the loctite numbers in the Manual are not what you pickup in the auto parts store. So I made some phone calls and got in touch with the local Rep and he told me that the product numbers in the BD Manual were commercial numbers and not available in your local Auto Parts store. I then asked him if I could just purchase some him direct and he said he could not sell me any product however he could send me a sample of each type.

I received a complementary 1.69 oz bottle of each type called out in BD Manual. Love free stuff.

Both are red bottles however the BLUE 2440 Medium strength for fasteners 1/4-3/4, part #33947 has a Blue banner on the bottle. The red High Strength 2670 also for fittings to 3/4, part # 32525 has no blue markings on it's bottle.

I was suprised how hard Loctite was to find locally. My father always had it available at his Jeep dealership, so I thought it was common practice.

As usual, Vickie is the answer-

I PM'd her way back before my bike was even delivered, and just asked her to throw a box of stuff together that would comply with the BDM shop manual. She sent Loctite 2760 (red), 2440 (blue), 222MS (purple), and 7649 (primer). She also included a big can of Wurth Brake & Parts Cleaner. I figure if that's what they use in their KC shop, it's good enough for me.

Big Dog does stock the stuff the Wichita retail store. On one of my trips there, they told me they were in negotiation with Loctite to develop special formulations just for their motorcycle applications - but I don't know how that ever developed.

Bottom line - take the shop manual recommendations seriously - and don't use the red on parts like foot pegs, or you'll have a hard time taking them apart again - ask Raywood.

Remember, insufficient loctite can lead to situations like this rental K-9 - not something you want to have happen while cruising down the highway:
