Well my 2nd softail batt just broke another terminal, this makes 3 now.
So I end up buying one of these newfangled lithium bats, a third of the size about 2 lbs, 500 cranking amps.
I was sure it would be a flop....but wow, my K-9 has never..ever... Started better, hopefully it works for a long time to come... The warranty is incredibly long also.
Maybe I finally got my moneys worth out of something!

Love Lithium Ion Batteries, They are definatly proven in other applications (drills, cellphones, etc) can run them into the ground then back. However hate the price :down:

I thought a Lithium Ion battery required a charger system designed for that technology. How can our AGM/Lead acid battery charging system safely and properly charge these Lithium Ion batteries?

Bigdog Motorcycles recommends to use a AGM type battery ONLY.

GOT INSURANCE? GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lithium batteries are really different from lead-acid. There's the problem of charging them, first. You can't just plug them in where you had a lead-acid battery. I looked into a similar problem like this before. Once you've got a microprocessor to monitor the charging process, then there's the difference in how lead-acid batteries respond. In a car or motorcycle lead-acid batteries charge over a long time and then discharge for a short time. Lithium batteries were invented with a different purpose in mind. So I'm guessing you will have a different life-span on your alternator, if you change to lithium batteries.

I have a lot of experience with lipo batteries so believe me when I tell you that you don't want to use them in your motorcycle. They are very temperamental, difficult to charge, don't like continues high current draws, and require a lot of maintenance. If you get your charging circuit wrong or stall the starting motor on your bike, here is a glimpse of what will happen.

I hate to say it, but those specs on that 12 cell suck. Is say it is a waste of money and besides it is only rated up to 1400cc. That is way short of what our bikes need.

...and yes, they need a special charger and controller so that they don't over charge or get ran down too low. I've used lithium batteries for years in the RC car industry. I owned a hobby shop up north and know a lot about them.

The only Lithium batteries that I have seen with impressive numbers
that would actually work in our bikes or in a car are the Braille Lithium
batteries... and yes, they are $1000+


I paid more than $150 for my 4 cell lithium battery for my RC boat a couple years ago
no way would I even try a Lithium battery for under $200 to crank my bike over.

Good info Jake. I've used them in race bikes, but we'd charge them up and run them just about out on a bike with no charging system. I'm not sure if they're a direct replacement for our big dogs. I know they work fine on most of the new jap bikes (rockets etc.) but these dogs are so freaking temperamental. I'm thinking the braille for the 150 bucks is the best bet.
