So here's a question. When I first flipped mine vertical, I put my plate on with the letters/numbers facing away from the bike. My reasoning was that the license plate light was on the outside & the way the plate is mounted when it's horziontal, the lights are at the top of the plate.

Maybe I did it the wrong way cause I'm a lefty?
That is how mine is, the light actually lights the rear wheel at night.

Sorry to hear about the lefty thing :D

But when I started noticing, everybody mounts the plate exactly the opposite.

Just wondering what everybody's reasoning is for mounting the plate in that direction?

Good question.
So is mine right or wrong? (OR IS there a right or wrong?) No one has ever hassled me.

Just info for everyone, It doesn't matter what YOUR state law is on how your plate is mounted, or your "ape hangers". What matters is what state you are operating in!!! And ignorance of the law is not a permissable defense for a traffic violation. Tinted windows is a common violation. What's legal in your state may not be legal in another state. Don't get me wrong, I don't like it, and don't enforce bullshit codes on taxpayers, but from what I have heard Florida cops DO!!! Especially in these tough economic times when the city and state need $$

The way I understand the new law and from friends who have been warned here it's a $1000 fine first time offense. Just not worth it:nonod:
I now will have to agree, and I need to retract what I said in an earlier post concering vertically mounted tags. Here's the last answer I got:

Steve,

Unfortunately another state can ticket you for an equipment violation. I am
not sure what Florida's rule is in licence plates but North Carolina reqires
horizontal mounting. Now as a practicle matter if you are heading down the
interstate you won't be bothered but I cannot predict what will happen in
Daytona. I kow that they have been strict on enforcing handlbar height
restrictions in the past. I hope this helps and that you have a great time.

Just an FYI. Florida laws on this matter have been revised. The wording horizontal / vertical have been removed.

FLORIDA HORIZONTAL TAG LAW

As of 6/16/09

The Governor has signed the reversal of the "Horizontal Tag" Bill that previously restricted vertical license plates on motorcycles. THE UNLAWFUL SPEEDING VIOLATIONS ARE STILL PRESENT IN THE LAW.

CS/CS/SB 1100 Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles [CPSC]: The Bill that removes the "horizontal" wording of the motorcycle tag was signed by Officers and presented to Governor on 06/08/09 .

Here is the wording of this bill as it relates to motorcycles:
"Section 4. Subsection (3) of section 316.2085, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
316.2085 Riding on motorcycles or mopeds.—
The license tag of a motorcycle or moped must be permanently affixed to the vehicle and may not be adjusted or capable of being flipped up. No device for or method of concealing or obscuring the legibility of the license tag of a motorcycle shall be installed or used."

That's the way I had mine before I noticed everybody else around here had the plate goin the other direction. I'm guessin it doesn't really matter. I just wanted to make sure I didn't have it the exact opposite of everybody else on the planet:confused:

I haven't been hassled at all either. I will admit I used my DOT helmet in leiu of my beanie when we rode up to Washington though. I hear they are pretty strict about that up there. Never been bothered in Oregon wearing my beanie.

I used the stock mount and wiring and just drilled holes in the aftermarket plate. Sorry, I don't have a pic of the other side.

Well I hope it is some KOOL vanity plate (and not just a jumbled bunch of letters and numbers)!

And besides, you don't have to sew some patch on your jacket!

Shovelcowboy:cheers:

I got pulled over by one of Michigan's finest and he tried to ticket me for dark window tint, after he called it in he had to grade the shade to Oklahoma law and couldn't ticket me. but he did hammer my ass for 70 in a 55
