Well I got permission from the commander and chief (wife) to allow me to tear the bike down and sent the heads of to John Sachs. :2thumbs: Pulled them last week and mailed them off Saturday. John told me exactly what he needed and what he is doing, really excited. I am installing a 600 cam along with his heads. I have already installed a G carb, had the transmission rebuilt, and am running a bandit clutch. Got the bike dyno'd for a base line a while bike. Will return once everything is back together.

Here are some shots of the progress.

Rockers box's off...

Heads Pulled...

Front jug...

Rear Jug...

Heads off...

Now the scary part. I pulled the stock cam out with the aspirations of selling it until I saw this...

See that 2nd from the top lob, it has a piece missing! What in the world would cause that anyways? Everything else looks clean, no metal shavings or anything.

Side note, are the head cap bolts reusable or will I need to buy new ones?

might consider getting those cylinders and head diamond cut while you have them off...youll be glad you did....theyre beautiful!

How many miles did you have on your TP rocker boxes and did the valve guides look ok? I've got to go with Billy on the diamond cut heads. I've seen his and they look killer, well worth the money and you've already got it tore down. I love helping people spend there money :D

Its about $450.00 for the standard cut and $550.00 for the Show cut. Here's a link to Diamond Heads website. They may be others that do it.

There is 22k on the bike now. I did not look at anything on the heads, will let John handle that.

Jason,
You're through the hardness on that cam lobe. You ABSOLUTLY need a set of lifters.
John
Damn. I am just curious what caused that in the first place. Could it have been like that from the factory? Doubt it. The first thing I looked at was the lifter just to see if it had damage but I could not see anything visible.

Could be a bad cam, it happens. I am with John you should replace the lifters now that you have it apart, not to mention you cam bearings they got to go too. I would also consider taking the jugs off as well and have them honed for re-ringing (break the glaze and new cross hatch pattern) and install new rings. I think that with the ported and polished head, valve job new head gaskets will increase your compression and old rings usually don't hold up to good. Your almost there so why not get it done. Just a thought :2thumbs:

Just curious what kind of oil and how often you change it and how many miles are on it?
Mobile 1 Full Syn...every 3-4k...I have 22k on the bike...I purchased the bike with 11k though.

You're not going to see any visible damage to the lifter. Grab ahold of the roller and see if there's any vertical "hop". There shouldn't be any at all. If it was me, I would replace them. http://cajonesvtwin. com
I already plan on it just to be on the safe side any ways

Just a real quick tip re: rings.
If you can see a decent crosshatch around the whole cylinder, and a very narrow shiny line (.030" tall)around the very bottom of the second ring, chances are that your rings are O.K. (It's also a good way to tell if a non-knowing wrench put the second ring on upside down, if the fine line is on the top).

Just a quick update, in addition to the heads I am also changing out my TP box's for the S&S. Will take pics of progress once I get all the parts in. Should be up and running the beginning of April.

Rings appear to have been installed correct, from what I can make out on the first pic. The cylinders don't appear to have that glazy worn out look, they look good to me. However if you are going to use new rings which I would, it would be best to have a fresh cross hatch pattern to help sit the rings. That is just me, I go overbroad most of time. That way I don't have to wonder if I should have or not and it doesn't hurt other than you wallet  :2thumbs:
