Left Or Right

Trying to adjust clutch on a RSD. Can't get the nut loose no matter what I try. Can't find this answer in the search. Is the nut left hand thread or right? Seems like when I bear down on it going to the left the shaft and nut seems to go in...like its spring loaded...then the wrench slips off.

which nut are you referring to, the one behind the cover? if so, it is standard thread. are you also using an allen wrench to hold the shaft?

Yes the nut behind the round cover. I was trying to get it loose without holding it with the allen wrench. Maybe that's my problem?

Thanks Franco. I did look at that before I started. Just didn't know if the threaded shaft was left or right hand thread. I also didn't think you needed to use the allen wrench until you were doing the adjustment and tightening the nut back up.

the nut is really only a jam nut to hold the shaft where it needs to be, but the shaft has to be held still, both tightening and loosening, with the allen wrench to get the jam nut loose or tight.

just noticed your other post; if you are able to get the jam nut loose without using the allen wrench, it is in danger of vibrating loose. remember, it has to be tight enough to hold it without using loctite.

Well I'll tell you.....this SOB isn't budging. I'll have to think about this for a while. Thanks everyone for your help.

let us know how it goes. remember, when removing the nut, the pressure on the allen wrench is to the right and the pressure on the nut is to the left. good luck. and heat might not be a bad idea, especially if somebody put red loctite on it. (good call K.)

damn, somebody must have thought that was the clutch hub nut and tightened to 120 ftlb.:eek:

1/4 turn off on the shaft from firm contact with the throw-out bearing and good and tight for the jam nut with the allen wrench in the shaft to keep it from moving.

You definitely need to hold the push-rod with the Allen wrench because that nut will not loosen:

Well I may have to take the exhaust off to get at this better. With the exhaust on there isn't much room in there for the wrench. It has the Vance and Hines two into one Big Radius. Sits pretty close to the cover. I have to grind down the allen wrench just to get it on the shaft. So right now I'm enjoying Easter so I guess I won't be doing nothing with it today. I have thought about a impact gun....but sure don't want to mess anything else up by using it. Thanks again for all the different idea's.

if all you are doing is adjusting, you should be able to do it without exhaust removal, but if you are going to pull the push rod/shaft you will probably have to remove the exhaust. as a matter of fact, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead and pull and inspect and re-grease the push rod. look for worn bright areas on the rod and also look at the rounded tip that contacts the throw out bearing to make sure it is not worn stupid. it is case hardened so once it starts to wear, it will wear quickly. should be nice and smooth and round.

Yep Tom all I want to do is adjust it. Not looking for any other trouble right now. I ...like many others cant get into neutral for the live of me...unless it is turned off. I just got this back together and just want to get it going and put some miles on it.

Right-hand thread which means lefty loosey. Try to get it where you can get Allen wrench and box end wrench in the same hand and use your grip to squeeze together. Putting some heat on the nut as said earlier may also help. Someone may have put some locktite on there. The heat will help that also.
