Leaking right side drive

Learned a quick lesson about Baker RSD transmissions I thought the forum might find helpful. My '07 K9 just reached 10k miles when the trans seal on the right side started leaking suddenly and badly. I thought it was just a bad seal. Took it to my local service shop who still sells Big Dog bikes (some carry over new, and many used). I had just changed trans fluid a couple weeks before but they found metal shavings in the fluid. When they took the trans apart, it was full of shavings. The main shaft had wobbled enough to take out the seals and bearings. Required complete $2700 trans rebuild. Shifts noticeably better now. Big difference. The shop told me this is a very common problem on RSD Baker trans. especially on Big Dog's. My buddy is now worried about his Am. Ironhorse RSD which is leaking like mine did. Baker now has updated partes to deal with the problem.

Thanks for posting, this has been noted on the forum by other unfortunate souls. We have guys on this forum that are very experienced at rebuilding these transmissions. Mine has just been overhauled by Andrew(Bigdogtech1) as a preventative measure.

$2700.00 for a rebuild :eek: :eek: :eek: I had Andrew a member on here rebuild mine for 1/3rd of the price. The rebuild could have been way less under $400.00. But I decided to have the Bearing door replaced, and the Main shaft upgraded. You need to shop around, there are guys on here that can get you part, and service for way less than any bike dealer. Just saying.

Its good that you brought this to the forum. However I would have searched the forum first before spending that kind of money. Bright side is you are riding again!

$2700!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
Maybe I need to start charging people more $$$ Lol
Here is the link to one of my postings. If you search, you will find many more on here. I posted back in 2008 about the DSSC having bad bearings and a couple years having a bad Main shaft. In fact, the dealership I worked at that is now closed (Rochester Thunder) was the first ones to start doing the bearing upgrade. I was doing so many we had to start ordering bearings from out of state. :cheers:

I wish Andrew would have posted his deal before mine went tranny went to hell. I snapped my main shaft early Sept. Of course it caused more damage when it happened...

Where in MN did you get your work done?

I'm getting mine completely rebuilt, new main shaft, all new bearings, new lay shaft, comp. sprocket, etc. for about half that.
