Leaking gasket again!

I had to replace the gasket between the Head and the Rocker Box because I had a small oil leak at the back left corner of the rear Head just as many others on here have had. Old gasket looked fine, but I replaced it anyway, did notice some of the bolts seemed loose but re-torqued the bolts to the specs listed in the "how to" and all was good for about a 100 miles, now the damn thing is leaking in the exact same spot, any thoughts?

Thin coat of Permatex "Ultra Blue or Black" on new gasket! :2thumbs:

Something else to consider. I just had a bolt come loose that holds the rocker box to the head. Another bolt on the opposite side had backed out 3/4 of the way. You may want to take a look under the rocker box lid and make sure everthing is still snug. Did you locktite your bolts that hold the RB to the head? Here's a pic of what happened this past Sunday to my dog. The bolt bounced around and lodged beside the valve spring, basically shutting down that cylinder.

Did loctite them this time even though they didn't appear to have any on them, going to pull the damn thing apart again this weekend and add the Permatex as suggested (didn't do that not sure why!) and locktite the hell out of them again, thx!

I've had to do this job several times before I learned to take a straight edge to the covers and check to see if they are warp. Thats why most people apply a bead of silicone to the new gasket so to fill any of the voids if the covers are indeed warped or uneven. I would use a sealant that is designed to be used with the gasket ie rubber and can handle high heat so you won't have to do the job over. I also use some 8001 3-M to hold the gasket in place so that it doesn't slip when installing the cover box covers.
Good Luck

I like to use this stuff here. You can get it at any auto supply store and it works.

Aviation Form-a-Gasket sealant liquid

Permatex - Gasket Sealer
Part Number: 80019

This stuff you can brush on and believe me it works. This is the kind of shit you use on metal intake gaskets on my Buick GN all the time and it sealed. I use this on my Bike as well on the timing cover gasket and the rocker boxes too.

The RTV shit is OK but in my opinion this works better.

Also, make sure you replace the washers on the rocker box bolts with the OEM ones. They have a coating on them to prevent leaks. I had leakage around thebolts and torqued them but they still leaked. Ted at Rolling Thunder BD told me to change the washers and it fixed the prob without changing teh gasket.

Steve at Bikers Dream of Atlanta can fix you up. 877-213-0062. A set of rocker box gaskets, head gasket and John Sachs says to even change the gasket under the cylinder anytime you remove the head. I think the rocker box gaskets come as a set for both sides but the other 2 gaskets should be able to be purchased individually. The gaskets are fairly cheap. It's just time consuming to break your dog down to get it all done.
