Ok, not much of a 'winter' here in PCola compared to what some of you fellas are going thru but there are some things I needed/wanted to do to my dog. Been putting them off for a bit with my schedule and the holidays but figure I'd better get it all done so that my bike isn't down during most of the rallies around here.

Some of you guys know what I'm up to so please shh.

The rest of you will just have to read and keep up with this thread!:reddevil:

Here are some pics of the tear down.

Start with this:

Pipes will get a bit of cleaning so they're off too...



Right grip/switches are off for installation of my Gen II cruise mate. Oh, and my tanks are coming off too!


Tanks are off now and I can really get some good cleaning done and check the wiring and all that stuff. So far, all the wiring looks pretty good!:D



Got a little corrosion control to do but overall, pretty happy with the way things look under the tanks and dash.



Everything gets 'bagged & tagged'.



As usual, Mrs. LDO is very supportive of me spending $$ and time on my 'mistress'...:rolleyes:

I hate to have to mention this Lefty but Put some glasses on when polishing with the drill! :)

Nice work Waykool but that's the price I pay for free labor I guess. Mrs. LDO is in charge of marking and storage of all the bolts and stuff.:D

semichrome stuff is ok i guess, didn't really notice an advantage over the mother's stuff.

You are absolutely correct kick. After I turned it on and saw how much stuff started flying, I grabbed my goggles but thanks for lookin' out!

LDO, you have a house full of free labor. Get those kids out there and have them start polishing. My boy just wants to play with the electric drill so has fun.

Shit... I didn't even get that... I had to write mine all myself...

but those bags are chapter from my own memory banks from last winter...

can't wait to see it all

Updated 'Grocery List'

Figured I would post an update now that I've been getting in some parts. Here's a pic of my 'new-stuff' table. Most of it was obtained thru JP Cycles, Ebay and a few other companies.

Here's the list of action items.

New exhaust flanges and studs
Compression releases (W/2002 start module)
Carb mod with t-jet
New spiked enricher
New Doherty air cleaner W/Desperado Cover
New green filter
New Pingle fuel filter
New tank mounts
New fork seals
New neck bearings and races
New handlebar bushings
New rocker box gaskets
Re-covering my wiring with braided loom
New seat
Luggage rack/sissy bar
New spiked clutch cable clamps
New switch covers
Cruisemate
Oil pressure sending unit cover
Ceramic headlight connector


And last but not least, I have a buddy making me some custom levers that will match my wicked image forward controls. (pic of machining progress soon)

I would like to point out that many of the members here dedicated ALOT of time via emails, PM's and phone calls providing 'stick & rudder' on everything from procedures, selection of parts and opinions on what would work well together. And lets not forget the amazing How-To section here! Some members even sent spare parts to my house without ever asking for anything in return.

I appreciate it all and Thank You!

Neck Bearing Races Install

So today, since it was raining, I decided I would install my neck bearing races. There are lots of ways to do it. Was going to try the c-clamp and some wood method but all my wood is outside and WET.

I went to the local H/Ware store and purchased a BAB (Big Ass Bolt) and some washers. Just eye-balled them for size but here's what I came home with. (spent about $8.00!)







Here's how the washers fit on the races. Not bad for eye-balling...




Had my races sitting in the freezer for about 24 hours, cleaned the neck race area with some wd-40 and a shop rag. Took my rig and installed one race at a time.


Then, I took the old race and added it to my 'tool' like this and pushed the new race the rest of the way.


Finally, since I never know when my buddy Ray might show up and QA my work to make sure I'm not slackin', I took my inspection mirror to make sure the race is fully seated in its 'nest'.


That's about it. As everyone knows, the important part is to not damage the new races during the install. I had no problems at all. My hardware never came into contact with the 'face' of the bearing race.
