Hello folks, I am having some issues with my bike and cannot seem to figure out the problem! Some input from my fellow bikers would be great! HELP!

I have a 2003 pitbull with a 117in, super E carb, Daytona Twin tech ignition(single fire). The bike starts and idles fine just fine and revs up on the kickstand. As soon as you put the bike under a load and hit about 3000RPM it falls on its face! Spits and sputters and backfires! I just put a brand new ignition, plugs, plug wires, coil, cleaned out the tanks, the petcock and carburetor thinking it was a fuel blockage. Yet my problems remain.

Cam sensor may be getting ready to or is taking a dump or maybe timing advanced? (Ignore this comment, I noticed your running a 117 and I targeted in on your year bike)

I thought that it was not advancing the timing and that is what might be causing the problem but I am unsure.

Did it just start doing this? Has this issue been happening for a while? Did you fill up with gas before it started happening or change plug wires or perform any maintenance dealing with the plugs, coil or anything like that?

The bike has been sitting for two years. I just bought it for little of nothing and I am trying to figure it out. I just put the 117 in it brand new. Replaced everything that I could think of so far and its being a pain! Someone told me to put a bigger carburetor (Super G) on it. but I wouldn't think it is running out of fuel at such a low RPM. The bike doesn't have a VOES on it either I was thinking that may also be a problem. But there again I am unsure.

Well, it might not be this easy! Check your plug wires and make sure the front plug on the coil is going to the front spark plug and the rear to the rear plug. Some have accidently crossed the wires... Just saying, you might have tried this already but if you didn't try it

The E carb will run on a 117 just fine. In fact my 05 ridgeback came that way before I installed a G carb/intake. Does it run on both cyls??? Check the plugs to see if they are firing.

So, what's got me wondering here is! I've noticed that you changed the motor to the 117 CI and I'm wondering do you know if the ignition system was changed to be compatible? The 107 had the cam sensor and the 117 has the crank sensor. Sorry if I'm off here, but I have an inquiring mind... :D

Assuming the bike originally had a 107 in it, did you rejet the carb for the 117?

Sound like you need more fuel if it's laying down at the higher RPM. I would start with a 31 intermidiate and 76 main see how it does with that. :2thumbs:

I put in a selectable digital ignition in it completely did away with the thunderheart system. I did re-jet the Super E with a 26 slow jet, 41 intermediate, and a 86 main jet. I dont think its lean, on the kick stand it will rev up just fine as a matter of fact it blows blue flames out of both exhaust pipes. The bike only has 2600 miles on it, the previous owner has the bigger motor installed and rode it 3 miles became afraid of it then parked it and left it just sit there for over 18 months,

I have a twin-tech on my Sportster but was not aware that they made it for the 117. Are you sure its compatible with this motor?

Kris,
A few things I would look at that are:
1. Examine the inside of the tank with a flashlight and see if there is crap floating in the fuel. Tank liner may be coming off and clogging fuel suply.
2. Check filter at petcock
3. Drain and flush bowl of the carb ( a carb cleaner douche never hurts)
4. Loosen gas caps on tank to ensure the vents are not blocked

The fact that it only happens under a load suggests to me that it probably is not an electrical issue...but there is never a guarantee with the dogs...especially a hybrid like yours....best of luck and keep us posted!

PS - how old are the plug wires?

Do you have aftermarket intake or pipes? Also make sure intake is tight and no gasget leak.
A couple other things I would check.
  • If you have pipes/intake (aftermarket) I would recommend .031" Intermediate/.076" Main jets.
  • Also search either this forum or google S&S Super G: There is a carburatoradjustment instruction. I followed the instructions and tweaked from there and got much better performance. One of the adjustments (calls for tweaking a roll on test under load).
  • I also had a problem with my Gas cap not venting, and created vacuum.

If you're blowing fire out of the pipes it's either too much gas or not enough fire in the cylinders!! :D

This sounds more like the jets you need.

PS I would think if your timing wasn't advancing you'd have the stumbling problem whether there was a load or not when you rev it quick...
