KLANK! when turning over then no speedo!

Hey all -

I seem to remember a thread about this but can't remember the specifics.

I turn my key and get the normal sweep to 60 and back. To RUN, 2 twists of throttle, and then START.

About 10% of the time I get a big KLANK sound from the engine and I have to hit RUN again to start. I've found if I don't turn off the ignition first, my speedo needle just sits at 0. Can't seem to figure out what is the cause or why it seems to do this randomly.

Any ideas? Thanks - you've solved my one and only other problem (corrosion at the solenoid) and probably saved me a few hundred bucks.

this happens to me sometimes but I just ignore it. Interested to see what people think though. Maybe a comression release issue which causes the starter to draw more juice from the battery which leads to the speedo issue?

See if it helps to give the throttle twists before turning on the key and the run switch. I have read that primeing the carb after hitting the switch affects the compression realeases:loony:

Sounds like your compression releases may be sticking a bit....try manually depressing the compression releases before hitting the start button because if they are not opening on their own, they will drag down the battery big time....especially when the engine is cold.

I got this same problem, just this weekend.... funny, my front compression release wont manually compress, is that a sign that it is FUBAR and in need of replacement?

Maybe not. It could have debris on the shaft making it stick. I pulled the rubber boot off on mine and sprayed it with Kroil until mine was no longer sticking and kept working it. Sprayed it a number of times and let it sit over night. Now when you press it, it goes down and pops back up. I put a little oil on the boot and slid it back on.

Nomad, thanks for that, I searched (compression releases) and got your thread on your rear CR sticking, (clicking open) I have the exact problem, I thought it should have been the other way around (clicking open was good, when it is actually bad) that being said, how did you remove the "boot"? Did you have to remove anything else to get the boot off? I have some kroil on stand by.

Are you supposed to twist the throttle a few times before turning the key on and hit the run switch. I always have everything powered up before i twist the throttle. Which is the proper way?

I have always heard to giev it a few twists "before". I do this before turning on the key and has always worked fine

I only twist the throttle a few times when cold. I never twist the throttle when the bike is warm. Has always worked for me.
