Kill switch issue

Ok, I just purchased a 2001 Mastiff this week. First BD. I didn't like the handlebars that were on it so I opted to switch back to the originals that I got with the bike. After I finally finished that project (whole other topic in itself) I fired her up to take a spin. It ran for about 45 seconds while I was adjusting the throttle cables. Then I was revving a couple time to check the throttle, the light went dim and it died. I took of the gauge cover and the light was lit for the kill switch on the EHC. I checked the plug and it was tight, I stripped a little wire off both sides of the switch and both showed ground in the run position. I disconnected the battery and the EHC completely reconnected with same result. Everything else works but since the on off switch won't work on the handlebars the starter button won't . I would bypass if I knew how and it meant I could put some miles on it, but I can't help but think this is the result of my own error. I just can't find it. Any advice?
