If you are active duty, try staying at the BOQ, much cheaper then out on town.

Blue Heaven for dinner, fantastic food!!!!!

Duval st... favorite bars are Sloppy Joes and Lazy Gecko. Hog's Breath is at the end of the strip. Then you have the water front at sundown, that always draws a big crowd.

I don't know how to check, but if you can figure it out try and find out the cruise ship schedule. The streets get flooded with people when the ships pull in. If you can plan around it, I would.

Key West is awesome! Spent 3 great years stationed there at JIATF South.

Coconut Beach Resort

Cool place, right on the water....albiet 1ish mile away from the action on "Da Crawl" street. A weekly rental is roughly 1/5th of the timeshare buy-in....as several of the main "owners" want to liquidate.

Key West isn't for everyone. Lots of wackos (homeless/drag shows/etc)...which is good and bad. Pretty much a great place to get drunk, fish and veg out. If you haven't been fishing for tuna..it's a blast assuming you catch one. Will run around $500 for a 1/2 day.

Bring a bike or rent one. MOST of the parking is for locals; no shit. You'll be better off walking/biking than driving around for 30 mins finding a parking shot.

While the burgers at Margaritaville are pretty good, ask about for top spot. Blue Heaven (above) is good...fun place to visit. I'll drum up a few more spots.

once you hit the keys don't be in a hurry, there are a lot of great bars and resturants along the way before you get to Key West, stop by Mile Marker 99 in Islamorado

I've always stayed at the Wicker House on Duval. They have a special rate on the net. Something about rent two nights and get the third free. Breakfast there are pretty good too. Must see places are Sloppy Joe's for the bands, Kevin's Irish Pub for the entertainment, the Blue Heaven for the food and Hemingway's home for the history. Catching a catamaran at sunset can be a very cool way to end a day, but at leasst once you have to go down to Mallory Square to see the sunset and the people that gather there. Renting a scooter (if you don't bring your bike) is a go way to get around the island. Go to the Blonde Giraffe for Key Lime Pie....best ever! Find some cuban cigars if your into them and just check out the sights on Duval each night. Get loaded up on Buffett music before you go to get into the mood. It's a way of life down there. They have some really great restaurants in town and you have to try the Cuban restaurant near Mallory Square. Great food there. And hang out at The Hog's Breath....some good bands there too. Lots of other things to do there as well. I find Key West to be one my wife's and I's favorite vacation spots. Have a great time!

Be careful to make sure you've had a few drinks before going to the Garden of Eden (3rd floor of the Bull & Whistle) you'll find too many people up there that look a whole lot better with their clothes on....but unfortunately have their clothes off!

1959....."A" school US Navy, first tour out of boot camp.....Key West wasn't much in those days. :flag: Could not imagine wanting to go there on vacation. Paid a visit in 2005. Nothing resembling the old Key West other than Ernest Hemmingway's cats and the urinal from the old Sloppy Joe's. I think they even move the Southern Marker.
