Key Switch Replacement

Energy One
Ok, so my keys were stolen and a locksmith wanted 60 bux to make a key.
After doing some research I bought the Ford tractor switch from Tractor Supply and after a minor mod with the dremel, the new switch fits well.( It was approx. .040 larger than stock.)

Now I am wondering about the proper wire connections, and looking for input please.

The stock BDM/Chopper-2003 key switch has one red, and one orange wire leading to the white plastic connector, (male), which plugs in to the white female connector which leads up and into the harness.

The replacement key switch has one yellow, one black.

My first thought is red to yellow, orange to black, but I am not 100% sure.

Thank you to anyone that knows and can advise.

Yes if its a two wire, you should just be able to short those together and turn on the ignition. I lost a key in my old ironhorse one day. I took the opportunity to install a remote ignition. Probably do the same to my current ride once the tumbler starts to wear out.

thanks

thanks for all the input. i figured the key switch being 2-wire 2-possition was just on/off and didn't matter.
but i was thinking since the key can only be removed in one posistion that-that would maybe make a difference, but wasn't sure. i will wire it and test it before i replace all the parts back secure so i will find out. just wondered if anyone that did it already knew.

Don't know why you'd want to be able to remove the key in the ON position...

No. Not trying to be able to remove key in ON position. In fact, you can't. Key is only able to be removed in OFF position, or rather ONLY can remove key in ONE position and I am wondering if that is on or off since no diagram came with switch. Gonna do a test install soon and will post about it.

Also, if anyone else is thinking about doing the Tractor Supply switch replacement, it seems kinda cheap made and the threads don't want to hold so the nut can be good and tight, so gonna have to use some loctight or something. Otherwise it's going to vibrate loose I'm sure.

My friend , the switch that you wanted that we all have requires no modification at all to make it fit. Tractor supply has lots of different types so maybe there is a better one to trade it for. I can't remember the actual part number but JJ will, anyway it has enough threads and is strong enough to tighten down with a socket so you won't need lock tight. Good luck.

Correct 2003 Chopper

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my first post.

I am installing Tractor Supply part number 0236570 key switch replacement onto a 2003 BigDog Chopper.

I guess the 03's coil cover is a little different because I had to make a minor mod. But not a big deal, it fits nicely and is snug now.

Was just wondering about the wiring thing since when my keys were stolen most all of my tools were too. So I am kinda starting from scratch with little to work with. I can figure it all out, just thought maybe save some time by asking around and I thank you all for the input.

No problem. Hope it works out for you. Bummer on the tools. If your like me it's taken several years to accumulate good tools. Would suck to be without them.

Switch replacement

Just completed this Tractor Supply switch repair on my 03 BD Chopper (lost one set of keys). The coil cover required no modifications at all -- the new switch fit perfectly and snugly. It doesn't matter which way you hook them up since it's simply an on/off switch.

I fit mine with quick disconnects just in case I had to pull it out again. So far, it's working great. Good luck!
