Key Switch Issues

Something I found in early Big Dog motorcycles intermittently loosing power while riding. Many of you hang 4,5,even 6 keys off your key ring in every vehicle you drive. Bad idea. The keys weight bounces up and down destroying the tumblers and sometimes the keys connection in the main power connector and housing. Up to 2007 I have seen this key switch damaged even faster with something as small as a key chain hanging down. Possible problem is the key switch has been damaged.

When you turn the key switch off. Do you loose power just as you start to turn the switch from the on position to off or can you almost get to the off position before the power is lost? Watch the speed o. If you loose power just as your turning the switch off that key switch has been possibility damaged and needs to be replaced.

If power is not lost till key is just about over to the off position then your ok. Still take off the extra crap hanging from the key chain.

I have had several customers with speed o not working correct, bike intermittently shut off at a stoplight and several other symptoms. You may never experience a problem with you key switch just wanted you guys to know a few experiences we have seen.

That's some good info. Steve! :2thumbs:

One other thing that I would add. The key switch on the BDMs utilizing the EHC electrical systems, "Does Not" switch any "Power" (12 volts)! It only provides a "continuity" pathway, from the ground circuit within the EHC and then back within the EHC again. :2thumbs:
