Gotta love that whine. Jim thought I would have it by Friday. Looks like the beginning of a good weekend. I noticed the install by Gas, nice work! Trying the install with a buddy who is mechanically inclined. I hope to utilize some of the members knowledge should I run into any snags. Thanks in advance.

I just installed one of Jim's awesome 4" belt drives. He is amazing to talk to and deal with. The directions are so easy that you don't have to have a ton of mechanical back ground to install it.

I was very impressed that when you pick up the phone the man himself answers. Jim is the bomb.

AJK,
How about some before and after pics? What did you end up paying for this? I would love to have one some day.

Why??

:cheers: You're gonna love the belt drive! They kick ass!! :2thumbs:
Why? Seriously, why? I've never understood what benefits come out of the open primaries? Seems like more wear due to dirt, dust, sand, etc. More chances for clothing to get caught up, etc.... all for very little HP gain. Although you do gain a different look and more "old school" flavor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I'm really trying to expand my knowledge base here.

Thanks!

I got mine because it is bad ass. I had mine painted tribal to match my bike. If you get the outer bearing support like me and many others did there is not much chance of a pant leg getting caught up in it. They sound bad ass going down the raod. similar to a blower.

They are just a preference for some. The same as some guy's like a hard tail over a soft tail and some like the Mastiff and others like the chopper. I take a low of pride in my ride and love the attention the open primary gets.

Really good question :2thumbs:

Aside from looks/style and the killer sound-

1. the clutch uses springs instead of a diaphragm spring like the stock setup does.
2. it's really easy to get into, no draining oil and taking off the outer-primary business.
3. doesn't make a clunk noise when shifting like my stock setup did.
4. old stock clutch would lurch on my first shift when the bike was warming up.
5. the unit is very solid, no need to worry about your clutch basket taking a dump (problem with some models/years).
6. no primary oil to change!
7. a leak would always develop near my primary inspection cover. various gaskets and o-ring solutions were always a temporary fix.
8. no need to worry about primary oil getting into your starter and causing problems.

I know other open primaries in the past had rattling/noise issues. Karatas setup doesn't have these issues.

Honestly I don't know why more people don't get them

On the price. You need to contact Jim. He does great deals for Big Dog owners. If we post the price we got ours for could cause him some aggravation with other owners that don't own a BDM. So contact him and tell him you are a BDM owner and see what he can do for ya.

On the chrome part. I got mine from him in polished aluminum and sent it to the chrome shop.
Jim is so much fun to talk to and he has a vast amount of knowledge.

He talked me out of the more expensive 5". I said okay then send the 4". I am now glad that I did not get the 5", That would have drug on each and every corner. He saved me money and was very honest.

I want 1 too,, I wonder since I got a pitbull (hard tail) it sits pretty low to the ground.. will it drag more than the softail.?? I had a real time with my V&H big radius on the right turns.. I got rid of them.. I would think this would be worse in left hand turns...
