Hi,

I own a 2006 K9 with TP Rocker boxes. The rear cylinder started a small oil leak coming out from one of the corners.

I have been looking in several threads on how to replace the gasket on the rocker boxes, but havent found anything mentioning if i have to pull out the motor in order to work the rear cylinder??

If somebody knows something, please let me know.

Thanks for your imput.

BBs right, you shouldn't have to remove the engine to do that
Thanks for the quick reply. My doubt is because the rear screw is too close to the frame like 3/4" of separation.
Does anybody know how long is the screw?

The rear one is tight but with the right tools you can do it!:2thumbs:

No you do not have to pull the motor out to replace the gasket. Im guessing that it is leaking from underneath the bottom of the rocker box, if that is the case go wherever you like to buy parts and get a rocker box base gasket for an 88 inch twin cam harley (lets just sat 1999 for a year). Now remove top cover exposing rockers, go to pushrod adjustments in the technical section and that will show you how to loosen and remove/re-install and adjust pushrods. Rocker box removal is straight forward there are a few links here on how to do it, if you need more or dont find them PM me and i will give you a more detailed how to. By the way i hope you dont have a ticking motor, mine came with TP Boxes and they ruined my valve guides and bent one valve, just got it back together today with all new S&S everything! Expensive but i havent been this happy with her in years! It is not normal for these motors to tick so for what its worth, hope this helps and doesnt scare you:)

oops forgot you will have to cut an allen wrench down to get that allen head out, that bolt is shorter than the other three.

The S&S conversion will cost you about 1K if you do the work yourself, its not hard and its worth every last cent in the long run!
I'm here to help!

Sorry to hijack, but why do our S&S motors not have all S&S parts from the damn factory?

Funny I had the same question once and I was lucky enough to find this forum. The S&S motors in BigDogs are proprietary built (parts bought from S&S but assembled by BigDog), therein lies the problem! TP parts were used on many BigDogs; Rocker boxes and rocker assemblys, camchest covers... Also many of these TP motors are not using S&S lifters, tappet blocks, or cams either. Case in point my 06 Ridgeback; TP Boxes, TP camcover, Comp Cam and lifters, tappet blocks.

Now for the record, Im not slamming TP or comp cams. I personally have had near catastrophic failure of my valve train after 12,000 miles with the TP boxes. I have the old parts and did the work myself (except machine work)so i speak first hand on this. Also this is not my first S&S motor (previous bike had a S&S built 113 and was trouble free).

Im a fast learner:bang:

Hope this answers your question :D

I've done my rear rocker box gaskets on my K9 without removing motor or gas tank. Its tight and I used S&S rocket box wrench set, but some cut down allen wrenches would work. The S&S wrench set didn't do me much good as I still couldn't fit a torque wrench in there anyway. Just torqued them to feel and has been good since.

BDM returned to S&S crate motors for 2007 and later models.

S&S sells a set of allens with hex tops for this application or you can simply grind down an Allen.
