I'm in the market to buy a BDM K9 but I've also found a few K9 250's as well. I like the K9 as it has the 300 rear and 117 but does the K9 250 handle better? I do go out to the Rockies of Colorado quite a bit but I do have the HD Street Glide for these types of trips too. What about riding 2-up? My wife loves riding with me and I enjoy her presence at the same time. Is the K9 that is equipped with sissy bar and passenger seat a comfortable ride for "her"?

Yep...Friend of mine has an '04 BDM Chopper as well as an '05 HD Heritage softail. He loves them both but I've rode his chopper and that is not a "chopper". That is the most comfortable ride I've ever been on. I just have to convince the wifey "we need and damn Big Dog!!!!" :argue::argue::argue:

If you search here you will see the k9 250 came out just before big dog closed.
It has less proprietary parts than the k-9.
The more you understand the differences the easier it will be to make an informed decision on what will suit you better.

I was really surprised how well my K9 w/300 handles the curves. Personally I haven't ridden a 250 tire bike, but have no complaints on the 300. I have the 12" sissy bar and my wife says its comfortable, but its all relative to what you're used to. We put 30K miles on a Buell, so anything with a back-rest is an improvement for her.

SKOGDOG

One of the old ones.
No experience w/a250, but we have a 2010 Street Glide and a stock 2008 K9. Wifey's preference is no contest..comfy hammock seat and tour pack backrest trumps primitive noisy Dog every time, but she is always happy to go short distances on the Dog, and enjoys the attention we always get riding it out for burgers etc.. Blacktopper has over 50K on his K9, and I have probably 30K on mine. We tour solo all the time and our touring mileage isn't remarkable when you look at some of the hardcore riders on this Forum.
The K9 doesn't handle like anything I ever rode, but just like Rhino says, I got used to it and it handles just fine. It is truly 'a handful of motorcycle', and I wouldn't recommend it as a first bike for inexperienced riders. Respect it and learn how to manage it and you'll love it.
Keep your Harley for long tours 2up...can't be beat. But when you want 'stones', loose the hounds!

Personally, I feel the 300+ rear tire exemplifies what "Big Dog" is all about. Of course no offense to the 250's out there as all Big Dog bikes look sweet as hell. I have an '07 Pitbull (300 rear) which took a little getting use to after my 240 rear Suzuki C109, but very used to it now - just takes a bit more coaxing. I've yet to see a Big Dog bike that doesn't look awesome, regardless of the tire size. If I already had a Street Glide for better handling, the 300 is where I'd put my money. Whatever your decision, get some pics up here when you pick her up.

My wife (length 176 cm) loves to ride with me, a BDM passengerpad and a 18" sissybar are keeping her safe....:D Before the 2007 K-9 we rode a Road King and offcourse that was a better duobike, but the distances in Holland are not that long and besides that, you will have to stop every hour and a half for refueling. With my wife on the pad the curves are even more smooth to make. When you are driving alone you really have to pull the K-9 into the corner because it wants to go in a strait line. Now I have to learn to make the hairpins, that's another story I can tell you.....:bang:

Thanks for all the input!!! I think I've decided on a K9 w/ the 300. Ive found several online. I'm pretty partial to black but the reds look pretty damn good too. Hopefully I can decide on one this next week. I want to get one bought PDQ....

I have a K9 250 so my opinion is somewhat tainted but some things that I considered when choosing which Big Dog to get; the K9250 has less Big Dog only parts so it will be easier & CHEAPER to repair. The 250 has the upgraded wiring system so no EHC nightmares. The 250 has the upgraded speedo that BD is now offering. In my honest opinion the K9 250 is the best buy for the buck.

I wish I had more money.
Of I were going to invest in a newer bd it would be the 250 for the exact same reasons.

Hmmm....very good points. I've often heard that BDM has had their fair share of electrical issues but no one has really specifically told me what the problems they had were. I have a friend who had an '06 K9 and he had to have it completely rewired only months after buying it new. It pretty much melted all the way down the backbone. Bad deal but warranty covered it.

I'll have to call BDM Performance tomorrow and check into available accessories for the 250. I have to have sissy bar and pad along with a decent passenger seat. I have to have those for damn sure :)

I have another friend who has an '04 chopper with over 20k and he has done absolutely nothing to it except scheduled maintanance. Are the "choppers" just more dependable or is he just lucky?

I've seen just 1 of these called 250 k9s. I'm telling ya, I wouldn't trade my 06 "real" k9 for one of then even if they put big money in the deal.
That lack of propietary parts and the real fatass is highlly noticeable. Also the baker primary cover changed for some HD, ironhorse, big bear, etc look is not good. Not an 117 engine? That piss me off too.
I like the new speedo though. :D

Just sayin.
