K9 history-download data

I got a 2008 K9 a week ago and had a dealer download the bike's computer data. I am hoping some forum members might have some ideas that would help interpret this data. Do the low rev use minutes mean I can expect valve guide problems due to inadequate oil supply? Is the rev limit an indication of horrible abuse? The bike only has 3074 miles and runs beautifully. Still under warranty (or at least until the factory techs see that map!).
The low and high rpm times are listed in minutes/seconds by rpm level (won't bother with normal operation rpm times):

The bike shows 80 Rev Limit hits.

700 24 min
800 97 min
900 187 min
1000 200 min
4800 97 sec
4900 24 sec
XXXXXXXXXX
5300 23 sec
5400 28 sec
5500 28 sec
5600 24 sec

6000 3 sec

6 seconds above 6000 rpm isn't bad, but the 80 rev hits doesn't do you any good.

That bike has spent alot of time at or below 900 RPM. I take it that from 4800 rpm and above you ment to put minutes and not seconds?

I'd think that is would be hard to ride the bike 3000 miles below 1000 RPM and only spend about 4 mins above that AND hit the rev limiter 80 times!!!!

Looks like the dealer cleared the EHC since it was owned and ridden, and they have been starting it up and letting it idle and reving the piss out of it, if those above 4800 rpm are seconds and not minutes !!!

the posted list is accurate--in minutes for the low rpm and seconds for the higher. Scratchin' my head, and trying to imagine how this pattern of use occurred, and secondly--does it indicate problems down the road for me?

Then I'd say that a dealer reset the EHC data log, which can be done.

Like I said above, It looks like it has spend all the last running time idling and getting reved to the limiter. Ask the dealer to supply you with a log of the data before it was reset. BDM should have it on file for warranty service downloads.

sorry that I wasn't more clear--there are many hours at mid-range rpm--but I didn't list them bcs those hours are 'normal operation'. I am curious as to what could account for the amount of time at high and low rpm--and what are the long term implications

Your bike is going to blow up tomorrow. There is no way to know how long your engine will last based on some igntion print out. If it runs well, doesn't have any unusual noises, then I'd ride it and forget about it. Welcome to the site.

I agree with Vegas, I think you are over-worrying about the motor also except the rev hits. 80 is a lot of hits for only 3000 miles and been known to have a warranty revolked.

My download from last winter shows my motor having been under idle (less than 1000 rpm) by over 40 hours.
But comparing yours to mine I have less than 18 seconds above 5300 rpm with only 22 rev hits. This on a motor with 65,000 miles and over 900 operational hours.
Yet my motor has run strong and given me great service. I recently took the top-end down and re-built it not because it needed it but because I thought it had a problem that turned out to be an issue that wasn't motor related.

I would say whoever had the bike before you did a lot of hotrodding. But the motor is pretty strong so from now on take care of it and it should last you many more miles. :D

Thanks, Raywood. The fact is that there is no BD dealer in Kansas City or I'da taken it there for a look beforehand.
I take comfort in the quality of the engine, and as you point out, it's running well so there is no reason to think it won't get me home....
One guy told me that if the engine was held at the rev limit, it could 'bounce up' the counter on the rev limiter--kinda vibrate it somehow--he doubted it had been revved to the limiter that many times...
I will maintain it well.

There is an old thead here long ago when we had a tech from the factory that gave us a lot of info on the ignition.
Can't remember it now but thought it may have read that for the ignition to register a pulse at a certain rpm it had to be at that rpm for a couple seconds. Again it was a long time ago. Maybe another member here remembers it.

But if your motor is running good not smoking and burning oil then I would think that you will get many more miles out of it.

Hows the thread on the rear tire? If it's about done then maybe the guy that owned it before you liked to do burn outs causing all the rev hits!

Hummm, I never did the math but that is something to think about. Most of my miles are freeway and I do maintain a high MPH speed. But this is the printout Jason at the factory did for me.

I can attest to Raywoods high MPH speed on the fwy, interstate, hwy, country road, back roads, no roads...etc, of course it is all relative. 72mph avg is just average to some...:D

DR, you have me wondering now. Since I've been through 10 speedo's maybe I'm guessing my mileage wrong. I've guesstimated a loss of about 5-6000 miles waiting on replacement speedos when I was commuting 100 miles a day down in San Dog. Maybe it was a lot more I lost! I was being conservative with my guesstimate. :D

Some times the wait on the speedo's would only be a few days and other times it would be weeks and months. Glad I don't have that problem anymore. My last one has lasted over 3 yrs now since I moved up here. :2thumbs:

Would guess the ignition is accurate though with the 900 hrs operational time.

If you lost 5,000 miles that would make your mileage 70,000. So, if you use those numbers you get 70,000 miles divided by 900 hours which would put your average speed at 77.7 MPH!

In reality there's time spent sitting still at idle, riding 25 to 35 MPH through towns, higher speeds on the highway, and everything in between. A more realistic average speed (and this is a guesstimate) would probably be more like 30 MPH. Since the mileage is most likely accurate that would mean the time is way off and would have to be something more like 2,333 hours! :eek:

Kind of makes you wonder what the parameters really are that the EHC is recording doesn't it? :confused:

Interesting. I'll have to get some clearification from the factory on this. I don't think EHC has anything to do with it. Laptop is plugged into the ignition to download this info.

Oops! Was that me that said EHC? I wrote this right after I woke up and apparently the old brain wasn't firing on all of the three or four cells that are left... :bang:
