I spoke to BD and the frame manufacturer. There has been one other crack in this same spot, attributed to vibration. BD wants me to take it to a dealer for a download and possible swap. The manufacturer was great, he told me no matter what BD says, they will send me a new, powdercoated frame if necessary.
 good to hear.

It looks pretty beat up for someone who says they took care it. The trailer scratch comes around the frame diameter too much for that expanation. Looks like its been on and off the trailer more than a few times. I don't buy it! Good luck.

fellas , the dead one is on to something , how bout this theory.obviously not deliberately done., but do know this from personal experience with my truck 4" off road surface,approach/exits from stores to street level vary from store to store,if I leave 90 degrees to road surface my frame will drag once the front tires start the downhill approach to the street, have literally torn off lower body kit from under the driverside and passenger sides of the truck entering the street level. do you follow me on this? in otherwords high centering the frame.:up:think about it especially with passenger onboard.:2thumbs:

Who manufactures BD frames?

That's what needs to be determined I guess. I can do the swap easy enough, but not sure what that will do to his remaining warranty. Not much point in speculating though, he's going to get the bike to Black Dog in Harrisburg tomorrow.
I think it should be all covered under warranty since he's still covered.

Looks like it will be taken care of either way, awesome that the frame builder steps up even if they refuse to replace it. Now my question, what does a download have to do with the frame cracking, I understand someone may have been hard on a motor but it's not like he has been off roading or jumping curbs,

Plus that crack is right on the edge of where the weld "heat" would fade off so the metal could have gotten a bit too hot there at the weld time and was brittle. Then, vibration, asphalt contact, or torque could break it anyway. That is probably why BDM is willing to cover it.

Usually if they say they had one other, that means one other... hand full !!!:D

Could always reweld it to get thru season and then take it in off season for the swap.

Glad to ear Rolling Thunder is going to stand behind it.

It's not Rolling Thunder, it's a Daytec. I was happy to hear this when BD ran the VIN, I know a guy at DT and he flat out told me, he doesn't care what sort of abuse the bike may have taken, he will stand behind the frame. I think BD was very wishy washy on the whole thing, saying the warranty claim was "up to a download". For those saying the bike was abused, keep in mind we did an 800 mile trip last weekend, and it hadn't been cleaned yet. Also, the LED installer put some sort of metal clamps on the lower frame rails to hold the wires. These caught when he was loading the bike last week, and tore deep grooves in the powdercoat. Look under your frames, if you really ride a lot, it will be trashed. I know when I took my bike apart last winter, most of the bottom of my frame was bare, and I know for sure that I don't jump up and down curbs. I also personally know the owner, he is one of my best friends, and while he rides hard, he isn't abusing the bike in any way. The bike itself is always polished and pristine.

How hard you run the motor should have ABSOLUTELY NO BEARING on a frame crack claim!!!

Bottom line should be whether or not it was from an accident or not. But at the end of the day if Daytec is going to do it, then no harm. The bigger question will be will they cover the labor and if not will they allow a non-shop aka you to do the swap.

If BD denies the claim, and I don't see how they can, then I will have Daytec send me the frame and do the swap myself. DT will not cover the labor, and I wouldn't expect them to, they didn't sell him the frame or assemble the bike. BDM does make some of the frames. I'm not sure if it's model dependent or they just share jigs with other manufacturers and split the load. I was surprised to hear it wasn't a BDM frame.

BD denied the claim. Daytec looked at the pictures and said there had been other failures in the same place and offered to repair the frame as well as weld an additional cross brace at the back of the rails. In the end the owner decided to use his auto insurance after a dealer made him a very unrealistic promise of a 2 week turnaround time. 2 months later they are promising to start the swap next week.

He went through his insurance as if he had an accident, paid his deductable, and his ins co bought him a new frame and paid to have everything swapped.
