Hi, I just installed a K&N air filter, PN E-3226 on my 06 K9. I am using the stock air cleaner assembly. I ground the tab off of the base plate with no problem. When I installed the cover I noticed that the inside of the cover made direct contact with the base plate mounting studs. This seemed strange because the stock paper element had a slight interference fit when installing the cover. When tightening the cover bolts you where actually compressing the filter element. This made for a good seal.
Regarding the K&N filter, with the cover bolts fully tightened, I had about 1/32” air gap at the bottom of the filter sealing surface. I reached behind the filter and could move it back and forth. The filter was at least the same height as the stock paper element. I also used the grease that was provided by K&N and installed the filter with the “top” marking facing away from the motor. This side of the K&N filter has a tapered sealing surface where the other side was squared off and flat. The stock paper element was squared off and flat at both base plate to filter and cover to filter sealing surfaces. In looking at this you would think that the tapered surface should go up against the cover since the inside cover surface is not flat. In looking at the K&N filter element, it wasn’t crushed. What I ended up doing is flipping the filter element over so that the “top” marking with the tapered sealing service faced the motor and the squared off and flat sealing surface went against the inside of the cover. This seemed to work since the filter was compressed all the way around after tightening the cover bolts. When trying to move the filter from behind with the cover installed there was no play or air gap. Has anyone else that didn’t have a crushed K&N filter have the same issue?
Thanks
