Getting ready to pull my K-9 apart and change the color, new front end and a couple smaller bling bling items. Is there anything I should now about before I start pulling this apart? I am sure there is many on here that have already done this and I am just looking for any heads ups on anything I should be aware of.

Thanks in advance.

Torn down a bike before?

Nothing special to do for the Dog if you have. Take the time to tear into the Tranny since it's out of the bike. Good time to re-wire her too....

Probably the most difficult thing for me has been putting it all back together without scratching on nicking the new paint job ..... :bang::bang: use alot of Blue Masking tape when re-assembling and take your time.....lots of experienced builders on this forum so I will let them guide you ...

Make sure you take pics of every part before you remove it. A lot easier in the end to remember how the little things that make a big difference go back together. Also, it's a good time to waterproof all your electrical connections and make sure no wires are rubbing. Oh, and check or replace all your seals and o-rings.

Tearing down the bike is usually easy – putting it back together is the tough part. The advice here is spot on:
• Pictures and labeled sandwich bags with parts, bolts from each section definitely help.
• Some of the got ya’s – happens to all of us is with the obvious – things like wheel spacers, when tearing them down they all look alike only to later realize that they are not. So get a marker and get to work – lol.
• Follow easy to remember guidelines – like RS and LS (when sitting on the bike). This will help when labeling the wire harness for example – when looking at the rear fender, which cable goes to the left and which goes to the right.
• If you are not changing your wiring – keep clear pictures or diagrams of connector orientation with respect to colored wires (by the way, removing the wires from any connector(s) is a bitch)
• Refer to GASMAN’s Phoenix thread if you ever get lost – it’s truly valuable. (Keep an eye out for the final belt drive, tranny shims and ALIGNMENT all around i.e. engine, tranny, primary, final drives and wheels)
• When reassembling the front/rear fenders I recommend using washers BETWEEN fender and bracket
• Careful when working with brake fluid – under no circumstances do you want it to come in contact with painted pieces.
• Use a “thread repair” tool to chase/clean all the threads on painted/powder coated/Chromed pieces (I prefer that to a tap – if for some reason or the other the threads don’t clean up using the thread repair tool then use a tap)
Just reiterating stuff we know and is common sense, hope it helps. Enjoy the project and good luck.

I have not pulled it apart yet! Where you guys going on new years?
It's going to be cold but hey I might be game!

Thanks guys for the info. I will mark everything as far as wiring.. The whole trans shim info is the kinda stuff I was looking for. I hate to pull it off and shims go everywhere and not know how many or where they go back! Thanks guys!!

Ok quick question.. Might be stupid but just asking.. Has anyone left the primary cover on and pulled the motor and trans out together? Just wondering if that is even possible or a good idea? My next step is to get the motor and trans out. So far all the wiring etc came out easy and looks very easy to reroute. Thanks for the help.

Here are a couple pics. Once I started I relized keeping the motor and trans together would not have worked as I was thinking.. So I think I am just going to leave the trans bolted to the frame while being painted. I am a little scared I will not get it shimmed back right. Still have alot more to take apart but going to keep it rolling until I have decided what color to paint it. I was thinking between red, like a black cherry, or black. I keep comong back to black.. Cant go worng with black.. but we will see.
