How many of us are exceeding the GVWR of our bikes? And by how much?
Also what is your average tire life in this scenario?

I probably 310 and my passenger right now I think is maybe 160 so 470 total (no luggage)

According to the K-9 manual GVWR is like 1105lbs and k-9 dry is 703, meaning 402lbs available?

So I'm over by less than 20%?

Thoughts

Yeah, I know -- loose some weight, If it were that easy I'd have done it 10 years ago!

Good post, Mike. Nobody has brought that one up before.
It seems there would be implications for limits of shocks and handling, cornering ,etc. I'd like to know what the engineers say about the suspension and handling under overload conditions.
A friend bought his first 'road bike'--a 650 Yamaha V-Star. He was 6'2" and 230 lbs and his wife was as tall but outweighed him. The Irish would say, "That's askin' a lot of a Yamaha, Flynn". Their shocks bottomed out leaving the driveway.
p.s. Don't show your passenger that post with your estimate of her weight. It has been my experience that particular issue will end badly.

Well she decided that until one or both of us loose weight she's not going to ride anymore!

Wifey decided a long time ago that she finds the K9 too primitive because it's noisy and lacks the 'throne' that was on my Harley Bagger. Heated Hammock seat, floorboards, etc. I even removed the passenger pegs.
On the plus side, she never gets upset when I travel.....

When I was talking to the salesman back in 07', when I was looking at buying my bike I asked him what the combined driver and passenger weight the shocks could handle, the salesman told me 550-600#. But I have not seen any documentation to back up his claim. And the chart below certainly doesn't back it up either.

I remember Big Dog had an issue of bikes that would bottom out so they stiffened up the shocks. Not sure what they recommend for max capacity though. I ride one up so I’ve never looked into it. Even if I knew I was over weight for the max capacity I would ride anyway.

Really -- nobody else riding 2-up on a K-9?
Serious questions like this fade quickly yet once the bullshit ball busting starts in a post it gains a life of it own -- Sorry but I see something wrong with that.

It wasn't the off topic here that got me it was a general trend -- people post a legit question, you get a reply or two till someone veers off, someone else snaps at them then the thread takes on a life of its own unrelated to the origin. I'm not opposed to someof the banter but per se but it seems to consume more than it should.

And I was shocked that there aren't more 2 up riders -- I suggest get a MC license to my girl but given everything she's even given up driving a cage down here and with how she reacts with center turn lanes, I can't say that was bad choice -- so getting herown bike is OUT. I;d have gladly fixed my old BMC 918ST if that had been the case.
Not meaning to rant -- been that kind of week -- and its only Monday!

Good question.
I ride two-up, Mike. Just have a p-pad, and pegs... no backrest. I go about 250# and most of my passengers are 110# - 130#.
Other than changing out the fender mounting bolts I've made no other mods.
Been following the thread with interest to see what those in-the-know had to say.

I've ridden 2-up a lot until I bought the mule. Made several trips with the wife and loaded down. I've never had a problem, only thing I noticed was I bottomed out on the big bumps. I'm sure I was way over the GVWR. My wife brings everything.

Looking forward to retirement
I run the heavy duty shocks, I’m 230 lb and Colleen is 105. Bike corners good when she is on it or off.

I’ve owned 2 Mastiffs no K-9. Wife rides on back of my Mastiff once yearly. Never had an issue.

:agree: X2, but I ride 2 up 95% of the time, however we are within the chart I posted. Sorry, I know that doesn't help,:2cents:
