Everything that I thought I knew about how the electrical system, and the battery and alt. system is out the window! I took my dog up to the devils backbone, about 2 hours from the house. I never turned the bike off the whole time. When I got there, me and the ole lady got a bite to eat, and when we came out the battery was dead?????? So we jumped the bike off and I figured as long as I don't shut the bike off the Alt. system will keep it running until I get home right? WRONG!!! Everything went dead right before I got home I lost all electical, and the bike shut down. So I charged the battery at home, put it in the dog, and checked the stater (good) checked the voltage regulator (good). and the battery (good) WTF!!!! is going on here? ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED!!!!:bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

Is there a fuse or Circuit breaker between the battery and the Voltage regulator on 03's like on the 05+ ??? Might be open and not chargeing the battery... Start the bike and chk the voltage at the battery..

EHC

Had my bike cut out on the highway after missing a gear trying to pass.
after sitting on side of the road for a while, found the EHC connector just slightly
popped out on one side, caused all kind of goofy problems.
Pushed it back in and all was good for a while then happened again.:bang:
It looks like it is seated but requires a hard push to snap locks.

anyway just something to ck, good luck.

Last resort....I would inpect the stator. Could be a problem with the magnets or windings. This was the problem with my co-workers shadow who had the same symptoms.

N8CAM, The breaker is not tripped, would be great if it were that easy. How do I inspect the stater chuck, And if I'm getting 16-20 A/C volts per 1000 RPM out of the stater then is is working properly right?

re

Check the Resistance at your stator plug...the reading should be around .26 ohms. Then do your stator winding short to ground check...use the engine case as ground and the reading should show an open circuit. Measure your stator AC voltage w/ the engine runing at idle. The manual says the reading should be a 20.9 volts. I might be worried about that droping down to 16 volts if that is consistent. If the measurements show that the stator is not function right, the the only other culprit is the VR.

thanx sun bill, I wonder if maybe I have a short somewhere, and if so what kind of short would cause this problem? anyone else have this problem?:bang:

and check the how to section for how to read your EHC fault lights. When it dies... don't do anything... pull the seat and check the LED lights on the EHC

I believe the 2004 and earlier are somewhat different. But I can't tell you what.

I had a similar problem ... my battery was weak and I thought I could make it to the dealer ... well just as I rolled into the dealer's parking lot the bike went dead ... bad battery ... new one in since last year ... so far no problems ... talk about being lucky ... on making it to the dealer ... but had to cough up the $$$ for a new battery ... actually glad that that's all it was ..
Good luck on fixing the problem ...

My ECH croaked on me when I was riding too. Its a bummer cause nothing helps except replacing it. The 2004-03 is different from 05 and beyond.
