jumps when put in first

My 2003 chopper jumps when i start the bike and put it in first. Not so bad after riding for even a few minutes. Also creeps alittle when holding the clutch in but always does that. Im going to adjust the clutch and cable tonight. I read a few threads on how to do it. Waiting for the bike to cool now. I took the cover off andafter a little oil spilled out i notice some marks and scratches around the jam nut. Im thinking this is from previous attempts to adjust it. One question i have is after i adjust it. If its not right which way do i turn the adjuster to get which action? For instance if it still jumps which way do i turn it to readjust? Or if it slips which way? Any tips or info will be appreciated. Thanks

Mine does the same thing when it's first started, the plates are just stuck together. When you readjust, hang on to the center bolt with an allen wrench to make sure it doesn't turn when you tighten the jam nut.

Loosen the adjustment on the cable all the way. Remove the cover, loosen the jam nut, back the center allen bolt out til it's loose, the turn it in til it touches, tighten jam nut, readjust cable til there is about 1/8'' play in the handle. ( from what I can remember) someone correct me if i'm wrong. Other things that can come into play, do you have the right oil in it, and the correct amount of oil.

Turn it in till you feel resistance then back out 1/8-1/4 turn. Then tighten jam nut. Be sure to loosen the cable first and readjust it last.

continue to play with the 1/8-1/4 turn a little at a time and you will find the bikes "sweet spot". some are different. try leaving a little less in the lever gap (about the thickness of a dime).

If I remember from my 03 days the clutch adjustment is different than you guys are describing :)

Ok well she doesnt creep hardly at all now..still jumps the first time i put it in first a little but im assuming that the plates sticking. After a short ride i decided to check the tranny fluid. Checked it while warm and bike was level. Its over the second line. Guess its overfilled. Should i drain some or not worry about it? Could this cause any probs?

It is. That Rivera clutch you adjust 1/2 turn out after light drag. Then make your cable adjustment to 1/8" free play. If bike is still lunging forward, you might have a bad throwout bearing (located on right side of bike)

Ok so it still has a little creep and sometimes it wont downshift. When im running 30-40 mph i pull in the clutch and try to downshift to get ready for a turn it wont budge. I have to rev it a couple times then try again. Only sometimes though. Which way do i turn the adjusting rod to try to adjust for this? I want to find the sweet spot

I have the same thing happening on my 08 K9.

Oil height should not be a worry.

Don't start your bike in gear.

Pull your clutch lever a couple of times prior to banging into first.

Just an update i refilled the tranny with amsoil shockproof and so far it seems much better. Before i start the bike i put it in gear pull in the clutch and roll it back and forth a little..no jumps! The shockproof seemsto have helped with the downshift problem. Just put it in yesterday tho so well see.

without re-reading the thread, have you cleaned and lubed and realigned your heim joints?? if they get dirty and frozen, they will cause alot of grief. and since you are in Jax., i can just imagine how much sand you have to put up with on the roads down there.
