jet change

My buddies 04 ridge is running way lean! I haven't messed with a carb on a BD yet. Just wondering if the whole carb needs to be pulled or can the main jet be changed with the carb on. Also he has some oil blowing out of somewhere. It's covering the right battery cover. He said he asked our local BD dealer about it and they said its because its running lean. That plausible?

I am pretty sure that there is a how to on changing the carb jets, but basically all you need to do is remove the air cleaner (depending on air cleaner and backing plate) and remove the carb bowl to get access to the jets. You will probaly want to search for the tuning the carb article also so you will know how to check if the jets are the right size.

You can change the main jet without taking off the bowl by removing the brass hex plug in the center of the bowl. The main jet is just inside. I have done it before.

You will have to remove the float bowl if you change the intermediate jet. Just be careful when removing the air cleaner so that you don't break the intake to head seal.
Take your time and its easy.

Oil spray on that side can come from many places, one thing to look at is the push rod tubes, make sure there seated. I've also had the O-ring in the head go bad and leak oil.

If you can't find where the oil is coming from, wash the bike, take it for a ride, check for leaks. For really tough to find leaks, spray the general area with an aerosol deoderant, this will show the source of the leak.

You should be able to peak in the tank and see if the oil level is OK. Most times I've had oil from that area, it's been a bad gasket either in the top of the rocker box or the head gasket. They're not hard to change, just time consuming if it's the head. You can clean up the bike and should be able to determine where the oil is coming from, but like mentioned before, running lean has nothing to do with oil leaking. Also, pull your breather and see if it has oil in the bottom of it. Could be that oil is coming from the check valve to the filter and dripping from the bottom of the breather cover.

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions. My buddy and I will have to have a bike party and see if we can get to the bottom of all this.

I'd have to agree w/ Mike about where the oil is coming from.I've had that happen before. It's probably coming from the rear cylinder breather hose which exits into the air cleaner.Good luck if that's not it.
