I want to point out a little detail that no one mentioned around here although I see many people complain about oil leaks between the primary and the starter.
This is for '04 and older models (LSD). So here it is:
I have changed many jackshaft seals trying to fix a leak that always was close to the jackshaft but never sure enough about it, to confirm.
Last night I removed the outer primary cover and was getting ready to remove the jackshaft bolt. It was only 1000 miles since my complete primary rebuild including new seals, gaskets and jackshaft bolt assembly (which includes a small seal around the bolt itself - this is important).
The jasckshaft bolt was a bit loose, although I torqued it to spec and the design itself would prevent it from loosening.. in theory.
At that point it was clear to me the seal in the primary was fine.
I added blue loctite on the bolt threads (the manual doesn't say anything about it) and tightened it a bit more, say 100 in-lbs instead of 80 in-lbs.
I think if that bolt is a bit loose, oil would travel up that bolt all the way to the starter and make it look like oil is coming out of the starter and not the primary seal - pretty much confirmed by what I could barely see when I was investigating.
Hope someone finds this useful, and sorry if this was common knowledge, but I'm new to harleys, not to mention big dogs
