IST installation

Well I'm half way through on the installation of the S&S IST ignition. What a pain in the ass! I bolted the module to the underside of the battery tray. The main issue with this was that it wouldn't fit between the tray and the the connection of the positive cable to the starter. To get over this I put spacers in to lift the battery tray - hopefully the battery will go back in ok and the seat won't be a problem. If either of those things won't work out I'm in trouble!

I've installed the new crank position sensor, the knock sensor, the head temperature sensor and the map sensor. No problems there except there is a bracket and screw with the map sensor that I have no idea how to use (no pictures in the instructions - HDLarry??).

The kit connects to a stock HD wiring harness - we haven't got one of those! There is an additional cable with the kit to get over this with 3 wires coming from it - they are power, ground and tach signal. There is a connector coming from the TH ignition with these same 3 wires going through the EHC - my plan is to take the 3 wires out of that connector (on the module side) and put the 3 IST wires into it and reconnect - PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THIS MIGHT CAUSE PROBLEMS THAT YOU KNOW OF.

Tomorrow night I am hoping to install the new coil harness and connect everything up and try to get it started - wish me luck! I obviously need to get the tank back on so may take time - I also need to do my shrinkwrapping.

Another question I have is that the instructions say to remove the cam position sensor in the nose cone - in the 05 bikes there isn't one - IS THERE ? It also says to remove the VOES switch between the heads - DO WE HAVE THAT? IF WE DO WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

I have taken some pics along the way and will try to do a "how to" when I'm done - I seriously doubt it will be a Gas Man quality "how to" but will do my best.

If anyone can answer of these questions in the above it would be immensely appreciated.

no Voes and no cam sensor on the 117 05's

the Voes wire from my after market ignition had the options of leaving it disconnected or grounding it for race applications.

Alhall spoke to Crane and they said if not using VOES you are suppose to leave it disconnected unless hooking it up to ground for timing.

finished it tonight! fired right up thank god - only possible issue is the seat seems to be sitting on the battery posts because of where I had to raise the battery tray so I need to think about that one - probably drill the underside of the seat - I'll try and get some pics posted

Lee, are your wires mounted to the top of the battery terminals? Mine are now mounted on the side of the terminals. This was cause the seat pressing on the wires we causing them to flex and them break. It states on the battery to not use them but from what I've seen most people are using them.

I would also be concerned with the two new bolts in the bottom the tray busting up through the bottom of the battery unless you put some layers of wood or something to protect the bottom of the battery. Specially if you are putting a lot of pressure on the battery! Your 350 lbs roll: ) plus jarring from bumps!

Lee, there possibly is an easy solution to your battery terminal problem that I did because with my alarm and air horn I added so many terminals to the posts that mine were hitting the underside of the seat also so I went to home depot and picked up a copper "L" shaped bracket in the electrical dept. Then I just drilled a hole in one end, slid a 10-32 screw in and soldered it, the other end I drilled another hole that mounts to the top battery post so it just creates a side mount for all the terminals if you have room in the front side of the battery. If you don't want to ruin a perfectly good seat pan, this might be an option for you

You can also run some of your positive stuff on the battery (protected) side of the circuit breaker.

I was thinking about the side terminals but as you say I do remember seeing somewhere that you shouldn't use them so didn't - after reading this though I will do just that. I have also been looking at Odyssey batteries which seem very powerful for their size as I do sometimes get speedo issues which a better battery might alleviate.

As for ruining a perfectly good seat pan - too late!

Rode the bike for the first time yesterday and ran well - I think I am seeing an improvement in gas mileage already - trouble is I got an oil leak where the oil line screws into the filter housing and the tank was rattling against the frame which is just about the most annoying thing on earth - I had to take the tank back off and put a spacer under the rubber mount half way down the backbone - need to sort out the oil leak with some PTFE tape and jointing compound tonight - gonna be messy! its on the inner one too so need to take the outer one off first to get to it - typical
