Issue with the new PDM, bike stalls when horn is used

I put a new PDM in a 2008 K9 a few weeks ago, and the owner called me last week to tell me that when the bike is running, when he sounds the horn the bike stalls. I confirmed the problem, and assumed it was a short somewhere. I posted the problem on the other forum and Eric and Dead figured it out. Seems the horn is backfeeding and causing the new control module to reset, details are over there. I know there is some sort of drama between the groups but I figured this would be good info to impart. Eric and Dead came up with a solution in a diode and new relay. Supposedly BD is coming up with something as well, but here is a fix that will get you on the road.

Special thanks goes to Eric and Dead for sorting this thing out so quickly.

Thanks for sharing Moe; I just got my BDM kit yesterday and noticed while reviewing instructions - "If your motorcycle is not equipped with a horn relay, one must be installed.....Through AWS order kit number 173-000107-00; includes relays, wiring and install instructions".

So I wonder which way to go and what AWS refers too off hand...

Get the diode and put it in either way. From what I understand, they tested both relays and between 2 or 3 bikes they got all different results. They think the flaw is something randomly built into the PDM control unit. Some have a problem, some don't.

Is this something new? I never heard anything about this. Is it a warranty issue?
Warranty issue - not really applicable Ken; I am the warranty claims dept here....:D

As for others, don't really think so either...this is related to the BDM EHC elimination kit. Might be applicable for those getting this kit as a result of warranty & faulty EHC - not sure.

So lets get this streight Moe, If you buy the elimation kit retro fit box you are going to have to buy this relay and diode and tell your dealer how to fix it before he can fix your bike with the kit himself. Not to say that BDM knows of this and are not fixing it themselfs.

I don't know what your dealer will say. In my experience the dealers don't like you telling them anything, especially when it's something you've heard on the internet. To make the PDM work, you will have to get, and install, the relay and diode listed in the diagram above. The BDM horn retrofit kit did not come with the proper relay, or the diode.

Thanks for posting this info from Dead and E Moe, I'm sure this will help those that installed the new elimination kits. You would think the kits would come complete with all required items needed..:2thumbs:

PDM Install Problem

Started a PDM install last night on my '07 Mastiff and think I found an error in the instructions. When putting the new harnesses in I was left with nowhere to connect the ignition coil wires. I triple checked the new harness and the instructions and there was no connections in the new harness or mention of this in the instructions. I found the original wiring for the coils, which was a separate little harness, and put that back in the backbone tube and that's as far as I got. Has anybody else done this or seen this too?

I haven't installed my PDM yet however, the schematic (included with your kit) shows the ignition module feeds your ignition coil directly (as in not through the new harness if I'm not mistaken). Whereas the Ignition Module does plug into the new harness for PWR, Tach and Grnd right. (Red, Green, Black).

Whereas your your ignition coil wires are Blue (rear cyl), Red (pwr), Yellow (front cyl) from your ignition module.

I was under the impression that the 07's already have the horn relay installed from the factory and won't require the diode. Is this right?

Just get the listed relay and diode. If your horn relay doesn't have the part number that Eric and Dead listed, then you need to go get it.

The advantage over the wire plus is it's a much faster and simpler installation, and in the end you're not trying to stuff 10 lbs of shit into a 5 lb bag. Anyone who's ever done a wire plus knows what I mean. Price wise, I believe the guy I did one for paid about $500 for his. If you gotta have a horn this simple mod will take care of it. The pdm will not fit the earlier models with a normal oil tank, I guess they can't make it small enough to fit under there.
