Is this normal??

Now i knew my exhausts gave off some heat as i nearly set fire to a pair of loose trousers (pants to you Americans) when i first started riding my scoot back in February. But this evening when i ran the bike in my garage for a while as i do weekly during the winter months, i turned the garage light off and noticed this whilst she was running. Obviously due to riding on bright sunny days and not in the dark as yet, i have never noticed it before, but Jesus, is everything ok here?

They are running equal anyway, but I would think its normal.. By the way nice job on the large picture:2thumbs:

I believe if you are going to have it running long enough to get that hot in the garage, you need to have a fan blowing across it.

It was only running for 10 minutes Tom at about 2000rpm, it was only when i opened the throttle a couple of times to between 3000 and 4000rpm it started to glow brightly.

I do not let an air cooled engine run any longer standing still than for 5 or less minutes. I was holding the throttle @ 2k and then I revved it up almost to redline.

Conclusion? Normal under non-air-moving conditions.
1. Is my engine quiet like no ticking from the skirts overheating? Yes, quiet.
2. Do I smoke upon start up or running? No, no smoke.
3. Do I ever see this at night and have thin walled exhaust pipes exposing this? Yes.
4. If I looked down during speed, is the pipe red? No.

If you find you agree with those answers... Why are you running the bike at idle when you could be riding those hours off instead. :confused:

Sorry Sven, i got that all wrong. I wasn't paying much attention to the numbers on the rev counter at the time and it was just registering in my small brain that each light was 1000rpm, i have since realised they are in segments of 500 so was 1000rpm at idle then reved from 1500 to 2000. 1 - 3 are a yes from me although I have never looked down at the pipes at speed to be honest so cannot comment on 4. I will take note of the no more than 5 minutes at idle for an air cooled ( thanks for the heads up though as it's my first air cooled) and as much as i would have rather been riding, it was well below freezing at the time and i dont do freezing.

That explains it. Now for the wrap up. What is wrap? Wrap is a science that goes like this. Why am I taking a racing trick, where this has the characteristics of a faster speed event at high rpm.

The simple science is when you heat something up [wrap a pipe], the molecules bang off of each other, cause more friction, and that means a faster speed out of the pipe. Lets put this in racing perspective. At high rpm, that muffler system is slowing things down so you speed things up at the other end with header wrap.

When that rpm is feeding fresh fuel, it does not want the muffler to keep the spent gas from coming back in, so it's a push out the pipe assist is the wrap. Think of how fast those cars are moving and the plumbing, the muffing there of, and this heating up of the air is to move the spent out and away from the fresh charge in.

The next thing is removing that fresh charge when both valves are open and this is called, 'overlap' where that wrap is pulling out the fresh, as you just putt around the streets and it has poop for power. You sucked out some of the fresh in the overlap [speed of it], and the science of speed down the tube just made one more bad move as if revving piss out of it standing still.

You lost so much grunt at the bottom end, the speed event is stealing the fresh. Schooled me so ask me how I know we wrap this up?

I have read through this a few times and although it has now given me a headache and i need a rather large Jack Daniels, i seem to finally be making some sense of it. Thanks for your time and what would be your final verdict?
