Is there supposed to be a gap between the kickstand and where it attaches to?

I tighten the bolt as much as it will go but there's still a gap, is that intentional?

Yes, there is a gap; however, it is tough to tell from the pic but perhaps yours has spread / distorted?

Mine looks the same. I only use it when I'm out. In my garage I use a 4x4 under the bike because the kick looks so flimsy considering the weight it carries.

being on the street, I can't use pressure treated because the chemicals will eat the paint and regular wood will rot in the rain but maybe I could wrap a regular 4x4 in a plastic bag and use it until it gets rotted, stolen, etc. and then just replace it easily enough.

I use a pressure treated 4x4 with a 3/4 piece of oak flooring I had laying around on top of that. You'll be 90 before that rots out on you..

I need it fast, cheap, and disposable. I have to be prepared for someone taking it for whatever reason and then quickly constructing a replacement. I can get a 4x4, cut it up, and wrap it and tape it as needed. If it goes away, I whip out another piece and do the same.

From the picture, it looks almost like the bolt is angled through the upper bracket (item 7).. Is the bushing (item 8 ) worn out or missing? You might also consider slipping a stainless steel washer in there to kinda fill up some of the gap.

The kickstand is designed to have a lot of play in it so it kicks up when it hits the pavement if you forget to put it up. The problem with that is it wears quickly and starts to overextend, which it looks like yours is doing. Eventually, it will flip the other way and your bike will fall over. A few guys have fixed this with a shim. It's in this thread.

That's pretty normal. I thought my 6-month old extended kickstand was further forward and leaning the bike more than normal, but its about the same. Curtis at WSW also said it's like all the other 'Dogs he sees.
