Is there a reason grown men do this?

As I sit here this morning looking at what is left of what was a not too bad looking and running motorcycle I am wondering if there is a therapist member on the site that I should seek out for help.I mean why does a grown usually sane old man take a perfectly good motorcycle apart and ship the parts all over the country?Am I going crazy or did I just catch some kind of rabies or something?

Since you have already gone off the deep end, you might as well take it completely down and have the frame powder coated :D

Looking forward to retirement
It's right there man. Pull the triple tree and powder coat the frame. Send the heads to Kendal Johnson. It's right there for the yanking!!!!

No not parting out.I hate when I read about that.Motor is coming out.Tree is off now.Getting a full paint job done.Rear fender is getting a license plate bracket frenched in.Curtis did the starter.John did the carb. The trans is headed to Andrew. The top of the tripple tree is headed to Curtis to be engraved and then to chrome.Fixing a bunch of crap in the wiring.Getting shocks rebuilt and who knows what else. You're right it is fun.Laid off from work so nothing else to do.

What is the best way to clean the engine up?

thank you, John, for making that statement. it has always concerned me about the trapping of heat in the motor causing damage. it looks good but i don't think i could ever go that route.

Check with S&S or any engine manufacturer, and they will tell you the same thing. DON'T powder coat after machine work.
I've had to cut valve seats, replace guides and seats, bore out of round cylinders, etc. because of the hi-heat distortion caused by powder coating. :bang: Why do you see ports, and other NON-machined parts with powder coating on/in them, and the machined parts are clean? Because the powder coating is done before the machine work. :2thumbs:
It's always a gamble .... more have problems than those who don't.

Way to go man . Can't wait to see the pics of bike
going in the other direction though. Rebuilding instead of tearing down .
Excellent use of your now free time . Although I do hope you get back to work soon
to pay for some of those parts !
