ran with a buddy that has a 05 "chopper" to day .......
his tach quit ..says , if you don't wash it , the electronics work???

What battery do you have?CCA? Is it on a tender? Was the bike maintained properly before you bought it, I'd say no...

Not sure what you mean by "User Friendly"
There a generic custom bike for the most part.
Generally a new owner will want to go through the electronics with some dielectric grease to waterproof everything. Beyond that a large majority of issues are caused by owners working on their own rides that don't know what they are doing. Big Dog has had some issues through out the different model years and it helps to know what those are when a Dog is purchased so they can be addressed right out of the gate. Most Dogs running a standard Maintenance free battery will need to be on a trickle charger once or twice a week depending on the quantity and length of rides an owner takes.

Most definetely Big Dog motorcycles are more than just looks try changing your engine oil for starters and then maybe give your bike some more attention than just looks !

As good as any other...

My Harley's broke as much or more; Harley batteries and other replacements lasted 10 mos. to 2 years. Disappointing that Harley's have the same problems year over year and they don't improve on them; only introduce new stuff and new problems...

Big Dog has its share, electrical more than most, but look how all the thin gauge wires are more concealed than Harley, very elegant. Belt adjusters and axle nuts concealed... and more... that makes a custom look! -- Harley does not care to do that... If that is what "user friendly" is; then I prefer "elegance" over user friendly, that is why most of us have these beauties! :)

2001 Big Dog?
Remember it is 14 years old; how would a 14 year old Harley be?
Just sayin' I luv 'em both!

Just an Opinion:
Many riders in our group with all different brands; seem to all break an equal amount whether:
Big Bear Chopper, Big Dog, Harley, Thunder Mt. Harley, or Bourget. :D

Battery: get a Braille or Tomioka; you will get 2 or more years out of them.

I gotta agree with Fat. They do take some extra love and some guys like me tend to go overboard but when people look at a trimmed out bike and say wow it's a big dog it is all worth it. Look at Fats pics from his last ride. The proof is in the pics.

I'll add one other thing. I have been riding BigDogs longer than most on this site! Since 2004. I fell in head over heals love with my chopper and will never sell it! Yes I baby it! Yes I am more likely to wax and detail it over other bikes I have owned! Knock on wood, my bike has not been a problem with break downs! I had a oil drop problem with my primary but that went away when I went to the open primary. These bikes are special. No they are not the one of a kind Martin Brother or Kendal Johnson. They were assembly line customs.

WOW, I was frustrated because I have to disassemble the rear caliper to get it off the rotor...to shim the rear pulley to keep from rubbing the belt, that aint user friendly.

Didn't know that you guy's would protect the bike like a ugly sister..

answer to some of the questions.
No, it was not maintained well.
I changed the oil ( it was all in the sump)
Ricky Farmer set up my 03 Fatboy when it was new.(Shreveport)
Neighbors 05 BD chopper is the one with electrical gremlins.
My 36 year old Honda, and my 23 year old Harley are in good shape. (I keep them that way, just as I will this Bigdog )

Thanks for the replies , I will make it a good one, then brag about it .

It's shitty to come on here and troll that dogs are crap. Either way your bike is old. You want reliable buy a honda. Big dogs have big motors and drivetrain. Stuff breaks.

You should not have to shim the rear pulley  Most likely, it's just out of alignment. Very common problem to have if the last guy had not a clue on how to align the rear wheel. You also want to make sure you have the correct belt tension. Yours will be 3/8" at 10lbs.
The caliper needs to be removed off of it's mount, but not completely disassembled.

thanks for the advice, I got the wheel out by leaving the caliper on the disc.
but to get it off the disc, there is not enough clearance to clear the wheel
without taking it apart.
I just did that to clean the pistons , and replace the pads.

I will set the belt at 3/8" at ten pounds I use a fish weight scale.
( nice to have a hardtail for that adjustment, only have to check for the tightest spot on the pulley)

Thanks again

Are you running from the Law or my ugly sister that you cannot post where in East Texas you are from. You got some balls to come on here talking shit about Big Dog Bikes. You may own a Big Dog (used one at that) but a wrench you are not. To take the caliper apart to remove the wheel tell me you are more of a dumb shit than a anything else. You must have married my ugly sister, looks like she pinned some ball on you so you could talk shit or else she would make you wear them around you neck at a neck tie. I suggest you sell the piece of shit and go find somewhere else to bitch.
