Iridium Plugs

I did my 25,000 mile service a couple of weeks ago and changed all the fluids and I always change the plugs when I do all the fluids. My local shop didn't have the Autolite 4164 plugs I usually get so I went down the street to a motorcycle shop and tried to get my regular plugs and they didn't have them either. The guy behind the counter said he had the Autolite Irdium Plugs for my bike and they were better anyway and I should use them. I've always just used regular plugs but if these are better I thought why not. They had to be better....they were 8 bucks a piece :D. I installed them and went on a ride for about 400 miles, no problems. Didn't run any better, couldn't tell any difference. Figured I got taken for 16 bucks. The other day I was reading the forum and the subject of Iridium Plugs came up and Bigdogtech01 and a few others stated that they were nothing but a problem, to get rid of them. I figured I had already done 400 miles with them and they were ok. Yesterday it got up to 70 degress here in Southern Arkansas and me and a few friends went on a ride. The first indication of a problem was my RPM lights started bouncing all over. I would be running about 2500 rpm's and the lights would drop to 1000 rpms and then run back up to 2500. The bike was running great though. Then after about 50 miles I started getting a miss in the engine. The more gas I poured to it the more it was missing. It finally backfired and died. It would start then backfire and die. I couldn't keep it running. As I sat on the side of the road on a beautiful day on one of Arkansas's back roads I thought about what was said on the forum about the Iridium plugs. I pulled the boot on the front plug and this is what I found.

The front plug metal fell off with the boot and the rear plug looked like it was burning a hole through the porcelain. Called my daughter she was off that day and had her get my old plugs and a socket from the house and bring them to me. I can always depend on her. She'll always come and get her Dad :D. She drove the 70 miles one way and brought me the plugs. Installed them and rode off into the sunset:D The moral of the story is listen to some of the Members on the forum, some of them know what there talking about and of course don't use Iridium Plugs. I got 471 miles out of those $16.00 spark plugs and missed a couple of hours of great riding because of them. But I made it home and learned a valuable lesson. I'll stick with my $2.50 Autolite plugs for now on. They say lesson's learned the hard way are remember the most. It still chaps me that I paid 16 bucks for the plugs though :D

Yep
I had the same issue with my 03 and the NGK Iridiums
A bit stunned though Mick that you don't have a spare set of plugs with you all the time.

Yeah, you guys need to listen to me more often :D Sorry to hear you had this happen to you. I believe someone on here was claiming these to be the best thing around, but the fact is...yes a fact, they are not. The best plug you can buy for these are the standard, NGK, Autolite, or Champion (not a fan of but do work ok) I myself use the standard NGK in everything I own and they are never a problem.

I use Champion. No problems ....easy to find....and priced right. What more can you ask for?

Two stock NGK's in the bike and two stock NGK's in the tool bag here….

Thanks for posting though, good to see hand on experience.

In my experiences, I have fouled many NGK’s in cars, boats, jet-skis, and other motorcycles. I once fouled a set of brand new NGK’s in a brand new motor by flooding it once.

I have never fouled an Autolite that I replaced them all with. I thought I did in my boat once, but it turned out to be a fuel injector issue.

Looking forward to retirement
I keep two Champion plugs in the bike and 2 extra in a special spark plug holder and a spark plug wrench!
