what are the symptoms of an intermediat jet that is too big?...increased mine from 31 to a 32 and now every once in a while when you leave a from a full stop the engine flutters and will die...always starts back up and may go or flutter and die again....did just fill up and almost acts more to me like bad gas....made it to shop and pulled plugs...they show a dark rust color on porcelin and strap is light black with dark black around the base ring...not wet at all...did notice the exhaust sound was dull or flat...not crisp...

It's unlikely that one jet size would cause stalling. I'd be more inclined to look at your gas cap or pet cock screen for debris. Sounds like a fuel delivery issue.

Mine did that a few times till i figured out the gas cap wasn't venting at all

I assume you've pulled the restrictor plates? Increasing jet size isn't going to do you any good if the motor can't breath! Did you adjust the fuel/air mixture after changing the jets and how many turns is it set at? And how far out is your accelerator pump screw?

I'm running a bored out (xXx) E and only use a 29.5 and a 74 main.

wow...yea restrictors gone...2-2 vance & hines with thunder city baffels...dual runner s&s air system...air fuel at 2 turns out..acc pump at 2 turns also...tore down carb and was clean no trash or water drained about a QT of fuel out of tank with valve on reserve and good fuel flow...clean fuel...put 31 back in gonna go for another ride now...72 degrees here today.

ok...rode 11 miles in town thru residential streets ...lots of stop and go...clutch hand got a little tired...but the bike never tried to die...it did backfire thur carb one time but just a little sneeze...so hard to believe one size intermediate would make this much difference

When I first changed my jets the accelerator pump rod was sticking as it got bound on the arm during reassembly of the carb.
I was dumbfounded by the stumble till I realized that turning the accelerator pump screw did nothing.
Easy thing to overlook.

thought it needed one size bigger....would ride down highway @ 2500 rpm with cruse on and motor would stumble every once in a while... no pattern...maybe once in 10 mi maybe 30 mi... never acted like she would die...just stumble momentairly and clean up...might backfire lightly thru carb...just felt lean

Sounds like you might have an intake air leak. Shoot some brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner around the seals with the bike running and warm. If the engine breaks up, you have a leak. Be careful not to shoot it into the air cleaner because it will give you a false result. 2,500 rpm is the transitional area from the intermediate to main jet, and is the leanest area. 31 intermediate and 74 main works best together. The accelerator should be adjusted until it just gives a good shot when wicking the throttle. Too much accelerator pump cause fuel to dribble out without wicking the throttle. Adjust that first, and then set the mixture screw with the bike warm. Turn it one way until the engine breaks up, and then the other until it does. Put it in the middle. Be careful not to turn the mixture screw too far in, or you could damage the carb.
