Installing grips (help needed)

I have never installed grips before. Is there a certain way to do this? Have the correct grips (stock), when I reconnect the throttle cable to the brass ferrules and reassemble, the throttle sticks and the back connection pops off. Everything seems to be connected correctly and when I removed other grips, no adjustments were made to the cables.

U should have loosened the cables to install the ferules on the right grip then readjust them. I had mine apart about a month ago and it's just a touchy getting it back together just right so it does not stick.

I have to ask...Do u have the stock controls?

If the throttle sticks, it could be that it is pushed onto the bar too tight. Allow a little play along the bar direction. I did learn to be careful. I lost a ferrule (Harley has them) down the bar which tinkled around for a month before I got it out. I dislike taking the grips on and off.

I didnt loosen my cables when I put mine on. Hold it and make sure it works before you screw it back together.

I am insertting the ferrules into place first then attatching the cable to the ferrule and making sure cable is riding in the groove. Is this correct?

I put the ferrule on first, slide the ferrule and cable through the opening for the groove (this is why you have to loosen your cables first), and then make sure the cable rides in the groove. You can do one without loosening the cables but not both.

The guys here are giving you good advice Joe. I've had mine on and off a bunch of times including when I changes the idle cable and when I installed my new grips. I loosened both the throttle and idle cables. Put the ferrules on the cable and then slide it together into the grip housing. Then you connect the housing. When you slide the throttle grip on push it tight against the bar. Then after you the housing is over it slide the housing and grip to the right about 1/8-1/4 inch. That will give you the correct amount of play so the grip end isn't rubbing against the bar. Its funny to hear of you guys loosing the ferrule. I did the same and felt like such a dope. Nice to see I am not alone. Good luck.

Yep,

I dropped a ferrule on the garage floor one day and didn't see it for a month and a half. So, buy two as mentioned above.

I had the same issue with sticking after new throttle install, the cable on the carb came off the nylon wheel and was getting stuck Mikuni carb.
