Ed Freeman

You're an 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vi etnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8-1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in.

You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is half way around the world-12,000 miles away-and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.

Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.

Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.

He's coming anyway.

And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board.

Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the doctors and nurses.

And, he kept coming back.13 more times.and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.

Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died March 25th, 2009 at the age of 80, in Boise, ID.May God rest his soul.

Did anyone see, "We were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson -- I own the dvd. Anyway, was just reading on him. If you remember at the beginning of the show when "Snakeshit" was playing B-ball on the landing field there was that tall guy named "two tall" -- that was Freeman. The called him "Too Tall" Freeman, he was 6'4'' and wasn't initially let into pilot school because of his height -- the name stuck.
Steve.

Another round please
Now that is a man of courage. If we all use him as a measuring stick of manhood and balls, how would you compare? I don't as of yet. I know many on here do as you are or were in the military. God bless Ed and all of you.

Wow, what a guy. By the way Barhopper, there is a BIG difference between being in the military and proving ones character like this man did. I was in the military and was never even remotely tested in such a way. Very few veterans are thankfully, and even fewer pass in such a comendable way. This is such an inspiring story I looked further into it.

He actually passed away last year in August but it was in March that the Post Office in his home town was renamed to honor him. Here is a CNN transcript of Ed's 2001 Medal of Honor ceremony where he was presented by President Bush. It would have been criminal in my opinion if the people that pushed for this had let it just drop. Not that receiving a Flying Cross is anything to sneeze at but what he did couldn't be more deserving of the Medal of Honor.

I'm not trying to be controversial here but I have to beg to differ on that one in a VERY big way.

Great story though - an unbelievably brave man
Not many is a true statement. England and very few others that are a true democracy are the only ones. Thats why the FEW powerful democracies in the worls are ALWAYS expected to bail out the smaller countries in the world due to the power and the BRAVERY!
