I'm not mechanical and need advice..

Energy One
My 06 K9 has only been ridden about 350 miles since I bought it last summer, and so far the speedo went bad and shook itself out of the housing (i just pulled it out, weld was broken inside), the EHC is gone bad (apparently), something within the charging system is bad and the brand new battery that I bought from HD won't hold a charge. I am in NO way mechanical to say the least, regardless of how much i wish I was. I'm in Des Moines Iowa and need either a kick ass mechanic or some really good advice, because at this point it seems the bike has been been out of commission more than i've been able to ride it. A buddy of mine told me to take it to somebody with a dyno, and they can tell me everything that is wrong with it, but I don't know anyone in iowa with these capabilities. Can anyone tell me the best route to get all this stuff fixed. I planned on just taking my tax return which I anticipate being around a grand and hoping that will cover it all. I have assumed at this point that I'll just need to go with a wires plus kit, but a speedo from J&P, and I'm not even sure about the charging system. I'm so frustrated that I spent all this money on this kick ass dream machine, and I can't even ride it. Oh and the clutch handle and cable seem crooked and I can't pull the clutch in hard enough to disengage the gears. I refuse to sell this bike, but I need some serious advice and help.
thanks!

Here's a simple check you can do for the charging issue. First look on the left side of the battery box for a gray colored little square box which is your circuit breaker. There's a little black button on it. Check to see if that is popped, by pushing it in. If it is that would be the reason your battery isn't getting charged. If you reset it and get the scoot started you can see if your charging system is working by getting out a volt meter while the scoot is running. Set volt meter to 20 volts DC take the red lead and put it on your battery positive terminal and take the black lead and place it on the negative terminal. You should see a reading of 12.8 volts or higher more closer to 14.0 volts if your battery is low. If you see low readings or extremely high readings then you do have a charging system issue. These are easy checks that will help in identifying your charging issues in which you can tell your mechanic which can save on labor in his troubleshooting. Dont take the scoot in and say I don't know whats wrong with it, you might get raped and that tax check wont get you very far. Just saying, some mechanics are that way and some aren't...

What problems are you having that makes you think your EHC is bad?

I wish I was closer, you have alot going on there. I would be glad to work on it for you. Just take one problem at a time.

As Brew said I would start with charging system. If you have charging voltage (engine running) of 13.8 or higher then you are ok. Battery voltage should be no lower than 12.8(engine off). If you have higher voltage than 14.2 then you may have a faulty voltage regulator which there was a recall on back in 06-07. You can check the alternator output by unplugging the voltage regulator and checking the alternator output with a volt meter set to AC voltage. With the engine running at idle you should get around 20 volts. In crease the rpm and the voltage should increase and could be as high as 100 volts. Be careful not to get shocked here. If the alternator voltage checks out ok then suspect the voltage regulator.

thanks for the help guys, I'll be looking at the charging system tomorrow for sure then. The reason I think the EHC is bad is because when I bought the bike, the PO said occasionally it loses power, and boy was he right. The longer you ride it, the more the power cuts off...COMPLETELY. I'm talking no lights, no nothing, you have to turn the key off and on, then restart it (while riding). It will do it occasionally if its cold out, but more frequently after riding for an hour or so. To the point even on the interstate where it'll cut out a couple times a MILE. It makes it not worth riding the bike, which is frustrating after paying 15000 for what i thought was my dream bike. The bike has been bored to 124 with a 630 cam, so not sure if that matters. i took it to a local shop and they told me they thought the computer was screwed. They dont have diagnostic equipment however, and he said he "rode the sh*t out of it and couldnt get it to die". Mile down the road after paying for it and it died again.

i wouldnt mind driving to take it to a good mechanic that knows what they're doing. I'd like to just trailer it to somebody who can hook it up, knows the bike and can diagnose everything.

Just a couple of other things to consider if the charging system checks out. Possible bad key switch or even the ignition module. Next time it shuts down, before cycling the key switch, check and see what light are showing on the ehc.

I would think the mechanic you took it to would check this but I have to say it since it happened to me, after a long ride my bike start shutting off, it would shut down completely and backfire as i tried to pop the clutch, id pull over turn the key off then back on and it would start right up, then die as soon as i started moving....Pulled off the seat and found the the ground cable on the battery had wiggled itself loose. Worth checking any mechanical connection you can find since these bike vibrate alot.
