I'm having two issues and need advise

First....( This is a used 2001 mastiff. New to me)
The rear tire is too close to the fender. Like really to close on the right side so close in fact I can't put my pinky between the too & it shows signs of rubbing, Plenty of room on the other side.

Second issue is I have had the bike now around a month and this is the second time at 50-58 miles on the trip the cycle sputters and cuts out like it is running out of gas, both times I stopped turned to reserve" bike did not die" first time I put gas in. This last time I did not sputtering stopped after I stopped and switched. First happen cruising at 55, then at 70-75.

Have you looked inside your gas tank? My tank liner was flaking out and had to remove it. Also check to see if your tank is venting properly (gas cap or vent hose plugged). Start at the tank and work you way down as the fuel system is the easiest thing to troubleshoot. Check all fuel lines to see if they are clogged as Ethanol gas sucks! If all this looks good and you have a good flow of gas into the carb, may need to reset the carb and re-adjust.
If you still have problems, it may be something electrical. There are plenty of forum members that can help you here as I know shit about about electrical troubleshooting. Good luck brother!:up:

On the first issue, it at least sounds like previous owner may have messed with the shocks/mounts to make it look lower? Can you tell if they are adjustable and turned all the way out?

On the second issue, (I know this may sound goofy and don't ask how I know), are you filling both tanks?

Yes I am filling both tanks and thanks for checking and the tip on reverse threads figured it out on the first fill as it was a super pain in the a** to get the left tank cap off

Is the rear wheel centered in the fender? The rear wheel is adjustable left and right to align the drive belt. You do have a 230 tire right? Some folks have tried to change size of rear tire. Just checked mine (same bike) and there is about a pinky of room on either side. Check your alignment.

Another thought is that the previous owner may have gotten drunk and ridden a fat chick on the back, which will cause it to rub. I have heard about that happening.

Mine did the same thing when I was riding sometimes....I would just move the tap back and forward and it would be right, it was just the liner coming off, just keep checking it and removing what you can as it comes away.
My back tyre was a little closer to the left of the guard as well, no big deal if everything is lined up and its not rubbing.

It does have the 230 and it is not centered under fender right side is real tight as in not enough room for a pinky, left side I could put thumb maybe little more between fender and tire. That being said, I had a shop take a look last night and they said it looks ok for clearance on the belt side... " I don't know how this is confusing"

Thought about the fat chicks and I guess it's possible but it looks like it could rub with just me and I'm 5"11 215 and my wife is a 135 heavy lol

I don't know how to check the shocks for adjustment but when I hit a bump it hits freaking hard I can't imagine what a hardtail would ride like

Had the same issue on my 02 mastiff,swingarm was broken at the shock mount causing all kind of alignment issues,all due to worn out shocks

What shocks are on your bike. How many miles are on them. Maybe they are bad and need replaced or rebuilt or it really sounds like they need adjusted. Post up a pic if you can.

I will get pic tomorrow in daylight, but I would assume they are stock shocks and the bike has 23k on it

Took my stock shocks off the first week I bought the bike and replaced them with Progressive shocks. My shocks didn't work at all and it might as well have been a hardtail. A BIG difference with the progressive shocks. Curtis has some shocks at half the price so check into them. They may not last as long as Progressive but will make a big difference.

Left gas cap cause I don't see how it can vent at all "I did the blow test on the right works fine"
