Hopefully your mechanic knows what's involved for you to change the ignition.
The ignition is a seperate piece but since you have an 07 you bikes ignition runs off the crankshaft vice the cam shaft. Most after market ignitions run off the cam shaft.
If you want to run a cam shaft ignition then you need the check and see if you even have a cam shaft cover. BDM did away with them about the 07 year.
You do have the option of replacing the ignition with a similar one that you have now made by the same company. Another one would be the S&S one that HDLarry has.

You have a Thunderhart ignition that is non programble (fixed timing). You can purchase several different setups that will allow you to adjust the timing and pick up some power. I got a Thunderhart programable looking at me on the table, just got to solder and shrink tube the wires

Shredder, what else have you done to your motor?
I have the same ThunderHeart but did not know if it would
be much of a performance gain with the stock compression.
Maybe I should install it anyway!

You aren't going to gain anything by changing it out. I'm running the same ignition and the only bad part about the crane is that they used cheap plastic. If I have to replace it I would go with the Dyna which is made from aluminum. Gas had one of the plastic nodes break off after a couple hundred miles and I've had the crane for 2 years so its a toss up. But as far as function they are good.

No since yours is an 07 its already single fire but realistically in my opinion there is no need to change the ignition unless there was a good reason such as a cam change, zero the deck etc. I wouldn't personally change the ignition for just an air cleaner or pipe change unless it was part of a project that I plan on continuing with.

If you have the after market Thunderheart which is programmable I would definitely install that one. I have raised my compression to 10.25, 600 Cam, XXX G carb. All of these performance upgrade made a small improvement in performance, once I installed the after market ignition the bike woke up and is now extremely fast. No need to keep that EPA mandated ignition with conservative timing curves in my opinion.

Thanks Shredder, yeah thats the one I have. My setup sounds just like yours except I have not raised the compression. I am trying to get estimates to cut the cylinders down.

I have an 05 Ridgeback as well, I changed to a "G" carb (XXX) and intake, Thunderheart ignition, and MSG pipes, then had to upgrade the clutch (Karata belt drive with Pirahna clutch) because of the difference in power....

I will re-state my distaste for the Crane with some pictures to speak the volumes.
The crane ignition cam pick ups after only 200 miles
Notice its all plastic. The unit is imported from who knows where. It self gernaded.

If you look close at the back on the crane module, the one plastic pickup is broken. The Dyna pickups are metal so hopefully more durable.
Saved ya some typing Gas.
