Ignition

Energy One

has anyone upgraded their ignition? I read a piece somewhere where the bloke said the biggest single performance improvement he made was a crane ignition - perhaps he had a crap one to start with - is the stock ignition on a dog good? I can imagine a lot of people not thinking about the ignition for performance enhancement
Thanks

I just noticed a thread in "tech" on ignition - don't I feel a dick - not that I understood a word of it!

I think the Crane Hi4 works great...they used to be crap but in the last few years they are very dependable..Dyna's are good too but I've seen alot more failures with them then the Crane's...All of them have ocassional issues...if they're gonna be no good though they are usually that way right out of the package....I've put a few on my own bikes that didn't work right from the start...they are an improvement in performance though cause the stock ignition is programmed to keep you from really getting the optimum out of it...

I see your bike is a 06 model mine is a 05 with crank trigger and thunderheart under the side cover is that the same set up you have?

If so what model# ignition did you order. I am looking to order something in the next few weeks had been looking at the Zipper's TC stand alone ignition that is made by Thunderheart but I like the models that can be adjusted with a small screwdriver vs the laptop.

Thanks for your help V.

My Dyna can be adjusted manualy(preset settings) or by laptop. Thunderheart is crap altogether. stay away.

Fhead... pm sent on the wizards

BDM... I will do ALOT of how to's this winter... including this... it will take me alot of time to do it all. I imagine the pics will be in the hundreds.

My 2006 doesn't have the hole in the cam cover. Have to order a new S&S cam cover then get it reemed for my cam bearing. Also ordered a pickup can (as sul called) or rotor (as alhall called). This will go with the Crane hi4. This was after talking it over with Alhall and Vickie. The hi4 is very well known and everybody uses it... kinda like the S&S super G. Something that most tuners will be able to work with.

How To's are Awesome

Gas, Any chance when you create the how-to's you can make them PDF files we can download and print. I sure others like myself need something in hard copy while actually doing repairs, mods ..etc. I 've learned more in the last few months than I thought possible. Thanks again!!

If that is a Thunderheart ignition module, then yes there is a "module to PC" cable that plugs in there. Unfortunately I can't tell for certain Chop. That does look like your circuit breaker line immediately below though.

Forgot to add that there is no "cap" showing in the parts reference for the module. That being said you would think that it would be sealed.

05 chop from what i've been told that ign. is not programable. It is made by Thunderheart. I have purchased one from them (Thunderheart) that is programable and will bolt back in the same place, it uses the same aluminum housing. It has 8 timing curves and 2 rev limit settings all wires are the same color except one but that will be easy to match. I haven't installed it yet but will update when I do.

You can buy more than just thunderhearts that are direct plug ins. Crane Hi4C will do this. But like the thunderheart, you will need a laptop to do anything with it.
