Ignition switch video

New 2008 Ridgeback. 139 miles on it.
I know this is a warrentee issue, but closest "Authorised Dealer" is almost 2 hours away and me with no trailer. Probably cheaper to buy a new switch from Big Dog and install it myself. Maybe they'll just take my word for it and send me one free. Think I need to just remove the 3 allen bolts to remove the cover with the switch and swap it out with a new one.
Anyway, I found this interesting and thought I'd pass it along with a video.....
Anyone have a direct phone number to Big Dog?? I'd like to talk to someone about this.

Well heck yeah. Send them an e-mail just like the one you just put up here and waitfor the responce I think that would be an open and shut case there. Make sure to give them all of your info so's that they can verify you are who you say and maybe get it in the mail.

Give them a call and see if they will just send ya one, wont hurt!! Worst case you may have to send the old one back first.

I have a faulty ignition switch that cuts out at times (see vid). I know its a warranty thing but the closest "dealer" is very far away and I have no trailer. I would be willing to buy a new switch from you and install it myself if I have to. Please tell me how to proceed. Thank you....... Greg

I really appreciate your support Gas, but I guess my line of thinking was that if they insist that I take it to a "Dealer", then the cost of the switch would be far less than trailer rental and gas money for the 3.5 hour round trip to the closest Authorized Dealer. Whats a switch run, $30 / $35 maybe (I have no idea)???
I've heard really great stories about how BD comes through for its customers.
We'll see how they handle this situation.......

Update....

Big Dog's response and my reply back to them just for clarification. If I do have to buy it, I'll be taking a ride out to Full House Cycles tomorrow.........

Just to verify, even though you recognize that this is indeed a "Warranty" issue, I still have to "Pay" for a switch if I am to make the repair myself???
No way you could just send me one. You did see the video correct?? Right now I have a brand new $27,000.00 motorcycle that I can't ride because of a factory warranted defective $30.00 ignition switch. I just want to make sure I understand things correctly and get my bike back on the road.

and actually youd have to ride 4 hours cause they would want to see your bike,diagnos it,order the part and then youd have to return another day to have it fixed....... I think I'd take gas's advice on this one

Only 139 miles and on a bike that cost that much, And YOU have to incur costs to get an obviously faulty (CHEAP??) part replaced!!!!!:bang: :angry:

In my way of thinking, they should deliver and install the part JUST to do right by a customer! Hell, no wonder so many choose to buy a used one (save $$$$) if your gonna have to fix it anyway.

I know it is tough times for MC manufacturers, and they don't have a dealer in every town, BUT what's fair about this situation (What's wrong with this picture????):rant:

So I'll be paying for the new ignition switch. Full House has one in stock.
Does this really involve an upper motor mount like Richard says? Seems that you just remove the cover that houses the switch. 3 allen headed bolts. No biggie..... I'll figure it out..... I'm off this whole week for the 4th, and I want to ride...... Here's the reply from Richard at BD.............

I totally understand your frustration and wish I could just send you one, I agree it is the switch, but I cannot.



However I cannot stop you from buying a switch and performing any maintenance you wish to perform on your bike. You have every right. Please understand the restrictions I have to maintain.

well i wonder then what NTSA and DOT would say if they seen what i had on my bike for a top motor mount...it wasnt even a nut it was a billet aluminum acorn nut that was simply for show.......not too mention it wasnt torqued from the factory cause it was loose when i got home from pickin bike up and the type of nut it was you had to stick a punch in the side where a hole was and turn it to tighten it,,,,so how would you determine torque specs on that??????????
somethings can really get you frustrated dealing with these bikes

I would send the video link to Richard.Romero@bigdogmotorcycles.com and see what he can do. I can tell from my switch that it's not of good quality!!! BDM needs to listen to these things and learn or they will die out like the others.

There are too many ignition related problems on this forum that probably stem from that cheap ass ignition switch!!!!

I would not put anything on the key like a key chain to add weight to it. That can and has been a problem in the past.

Big Dogs and frustration goes hand in hand but still we love those choppers! I had the same problem with my 07 and the dealer was stumped to the problem. Wasn't till i emailed BD that now it wasn't just a little quirk but a real safety issue if my bike decided to shut down going down the interstate in traffic. Come to find out that an older 03-04 switch was used on my bike. They replaced it next day and haven't had a problem (ignition switch wise) since. And I echo the response, don't add any weight to the key!

I know you just purchased a new switch, but I have one (new 08 Ridgeback)laying around, it's a left over from my Wire Plus EHC removal.
