My question is about the idiot light for the oil sending unit.....What triggers the light to go on ? Is it low pressure or is it when there is no presence of oil to complete the circut....

low oil pressure.. usually below 3psi..... when low or no pressure it makes a ground to the engine.. which siginals the light... no power @ this terminal..... only a switched ground... install a gauge to verify your pressure switch

well these motore dont really have alot of psi.. even though the oil pump say HVHP//high volume, high pressure.. that why the tach light flash below 1K rpm.. low rpm means low oil pressure to.. I've never seen mine below 7-10 psi though.... the hotter the oil the thinner the less pressure.. & yes you can get other pressure switches,, most good auto parts stores have some just be sure it will fit.some auto pressure switches are larger in dim... I just use a gauge.. some members say there oil light flickers @ a hot idel...

I woodnt be to concerned as you can go along way with no oil a Harley can go a hundred miles with the keys sheared off in the oil pump and I know my 124 will go 40 cause when I first built it I got 40 miles from home and sheared a key so when the oil light comes on its telling you a problem is fixing to happen

Thanks...Eric / Rub....Goin to install a pressure gage and continue to run the idiot light for the hell of it.....but i'm going to run my pressure gage at the tappet screen location just remove the screw and install....figured thats a good place to get a good readin on whats being pumped to the top end...

Thanks

Hey Five dont get upset by what you see for oil preasure cause our motors dont run much.. I played with oil pump spacing to raise the preasure with good results but at idle it will scare you lookin at a guage but all is well

Yea figured that.....just want to establish base line on the pressure readings....so I know what the norm is for our S&S motors....just did a complete overhaul on my motor and waitin on my crank to come back after balancing.....I want to do a little more monitoring on this motor.....My front rod bearing went out at 28K just want to make sure my fresh motor has plenty of oil moving around
