I think my brother is getting out his rain clouds again

My older brother has owned several Harley's over the years and has a pretty good general knowledge. However he has been known to rain on a guys parade every now and then. What I mean is if you hear a small tick in your motor he's the guy that will say, "Man that sounds like a rod knocking, your probably gonna have to buy a new motor and you know those things are $10,000 new"

You know worst case scenario guy....

I love him to death be he tends to blow shit out of per portion most of the time.

So now that I've rambled, he was asking me the other day how I liked my mastiff. I told him it had killer torque and kinda scared the shit out of me in 4th gear at 7,000+ rpm.

So he said "man you can't ride that thing like that your gonna blow that motor up. These engines aren't ment to be wound that hard". Then he asks how often have I twisted it that hard. To my reply was oh about three times today and I've only rode it about 20 miles.

He then told me he never ever ran any of his bike over 3,000 rpm. To which my response was "well shit...that's no fun"

So in your opinion what's so called safe rpm range. How often can or should you let your dog run?

Me personally I love the way my bike feels when it starts to hit 4,000 and up the power really starts coming on strong. But on the other hand I don't want to sling parts all over the highway.

If you have read this far without getting board please give your input.

These motors are not designed to do much over 6,000 rpm and your rev limiter will not let you rev the motor more either.
My bike pulls best somewhere between 3,000 - 4,500 rpm so I don't rev it much more than that.

I think your tac is off.... at 7k your motor should be all over the ground... and air... and in your body.... and if it's not you're one lucky guy....
Here's what happens at 6800 rpms:

To be truthful when it's pegged out I'm not looking at exactly what the tach says all I can see from trying to hold on and keep my eyes on the road is it's way in the red. And I did bounce it off the rev limiter 1 time. 7+ was a guess meaning pinned it didn't have anymore to give.

6000 is pretty much wfo! Keep it between 3500-4500 that's where these motors pull! But, for your knowledge put the dog on a dyno and see where YOUR motor falls on its face & stops pulling
There is a shop in joplin (that's not to far from where I live) I've heard he's one of the best around. Would like to have it dynoed anyway just to get a good tune. Don't really care about making 2-5 more hp just like to have dyno tuning done to see what's going as far as air fuel ratios and such.

Thanks for the comments I'm fairly sure I can keep it under 5,000 ish from time to time. I do know mine is pulling like crazy around 4500. May not be stock motor either though. I bought it from a consignment shop selling it for the second owner. Not a lot of knowledge given about the bike. I do know it has a 2 into 1 header, I think it's a Paul yaffee (sp) and it lopes like one of my solid roller big blocks. May be stock too just don't know a lot about it and neither did they. That's why I'm asking and going over it. Thanks for the input!!

Yeah I was going to say if you pegged up to 7K on the RPMs you'd have surpassed the rev limiter. You'll know if your there because the motor will sound like it's cutting out and popping. Like others said, you'd be shelling a motor if at 7K.

Yes, your brother is right, (isn't he always?:job:) you need a new motor, so just strap that thing to a skid and ship out to me, I'll give it it's last rights and take care of the final details for you! :oldlaugh: OR, your brother is full of it, in which case, I aint gonna be getting any motor! Stay Safe (slow down a little bit!)

I will get on it every now and then and take it to the rev limiter which they say is at 6,250 rpm, but just riding around I never get much over 4,000 rpm.

Hey Brother---call ahead make sure the boys in Joplin know you have a larger than normal bike because not all can fit a Mastiff wheelbase on their Dyno.

I push the k9 every now and then, but never really hard.. there were a few times when I had a patch on my back and the same guy riding a vrod with a rival patch wanted to go at at and I spanked him badly.. both times.. these bikes are vicious and I was foolish to take the k9 up to 148 before getting deathly scared and backing off.. but point being even when I did that I don't think I ever got any higher then about 6k.. would I want to go that high, probably not due to the fact that I'm not gunna throw revtec or Ultima parts in my S&S when I do mess her up, just the simple fact that S&S is like the Lamborghini of motorcycle engines and very proud of their name as to why they charge an arm, leg and testicle for parts.. but if u can afford it.. hell with it and ride on brotha!!
