I have an 06 k9 and I`m wanting to at least get rid of the EPA rated 117 and make it like an engine that S&S would have produced I don’t understand all the different decking definitions and have called S&S and they stated that the only difference was cylinder height of 4.888 no valve changes but yet I am confused can someone put all this in plain english without milling heads and so forth. I am prepared to purchase a cam switch (don’t know which yet) S&S rocker boxes and what ever else I need just don’t want a motor that last 3000 miles or do I need a 150 horsepower...I apologize in advance for you motorheads that had to read this that understands all this stuff but I
don’t....and just want to improve my bike.

Reducing the cylinder height will increase the compression all else being the same. Cam change is a good idea with the reduction of cylinder height.

Leave it stock and enjoy it. Go with the S&S six bolt rocker upgrade.

Once you start messing with things you don't understand you'll regret it. They get tempermental and need lots of attention.

I have never seen a chopper at the drag strip.

putting it back to how it would of come from S&S (i.e. not EPA detuned) should be ok from a realiability point as long as the mech doing the work knows what he is doing. Not sure about the 06 year but the 05's had smaller valves (S&S stock size is 1.605 and 2.000) and as you already know the cylinders were taller by about .040 I think. Also, if you have the 4 bolt TP rocker boxes it can be a good idea to change them for S&S - some have had problems and others haven't. Some also change the rocker arms for S&S (I didn't). I don't think the 06 had the E carb with restrictor plates but someone might correct me on that. As for the cam you need to know what you got in there now - many have gone with the 600 which is a decent performer through the rpm range without being too radical (if you change your cam make sure your springs are correct). Doing all that, and doing it properly, and you should be golden. If you do all of this you may want to make sure your clutch is good - many have switched to Bandit and I haven't seen any complaints yet.

Good guy. Like to polish the scoot thats all.
If that's the case the only thing I'd do to the engine is polish it! :2thumbs:

Once you start messing with the engine, changing this and that, it becomes a never ending battle of repairing/replacing the weakest link... :(

I know I know I know I screwed up with the intro but I have now done that as far as how I got the nickname Rubwhore that came from the Harley shop where I work, I have an 02 Corvette and installed a trailer hitch so when i went to rallys I could pull a bike but the trailer was matched to the car (a Baxley drop deck $6500 bucks) so they named me Rub (Rich Urban Biker) and Whore (We Haul Our Rides Everywhere) but if the intro is how things are judged here I apologize...as I stated in my intro if anybody needs part number help...(didn`t state anything about hustling partsand was jumped quick for that) I would be glad to provide not meaning to step on toes but I guess they have not been to a Harley Dealer and needed help as most of us look at customers that don`t know what they need and point them to the service department thinking if he don`t know what he needs he can`t fix his bike so why waste my time.If I need to leave this forum and not post anything please let me know as I`m not 6 years old nor am I versed on this Forum`s protocals you moderators that take the intro so seriously should have a warning setup so that if you don`t post in the intro area first you will catch a rash of crap from folks not having anything better to do but complain,I thought this forum was about riding and improving your BigDog motorcycle not Internet 101 but then again bikers drive past fellow bikers on the side of the road all the time these days and don`t even think about stopping.

I am with you...
Some people just want to fix there bike or get some info....Intros come with time when they know how things work here.....but some carry a big stick..and swing it to often in my opinion.
Don't go anywhere. The site is a very good site with a lot of info and a lot of knowledgeable people willing to help...
Once you get by the forum police all is grand...

Welcome to the site. As far as mods, I will have to go with what others said. Just keep her clean and well maintained and you are more likely to have less problems and frustrations down the road.

In my case the only major change was a S&S .600 cam and a a change from the TP Rockers to S&S along with springs and others associated componets. Did keep the TP BOxes though and have no problems with them.

Gained a few ponies and some torque and have had no issues with the power plant other than the initial excess guide wear which generated the switch to S&S Rockers springs, etc under waranty.

Good luck and welcome again.

Thanks for the welcome and my progress

I so thank your welcome and have been learning a lot from this board, my K9 came in pieces so have already learned a lot from here have also discovered a vast amount of interchange info from Bigdog to Harley as the local Bigdog dealer sucks and won`t stock parts ie had to redo my trany and we had all the bearings and trappdoor stuff,I am currently researching who to send the heads to have ported and polished will make cam determination at Porters advice so anybody that has input on who to use would be appeciated, have already bought the S&S Rocker boxes as I`ve read on the vast issues here on that.I have already ordered the Thunderheart controller as well the Dakota Digital speedo that fits in the stock housing and retains the tach and have made contact with Ed The airbrush artist in Witchita through here so I am utilizing this resource quite heavily. I just don`t have alot of bullshit about nothing to post but if anybody needs my help I will be glad to help....

I wish I had more money.
As far as the head work on the bike you may want to contact John Sacks. Or is it Sachs. Either way he is a forum membre here and is suposed to be a great engine guy. He does all the good stuff. Pm him and he will let you know what you should do with the motor.
