I just bought a big dog and can't even get it started to ride it!

I just bought an 05 Ridgeback. Had it shipped from Florida. When it got here it was dead and would not start. No big deal, been on truck for couple weeks and not on tender. Put on tender would not start days later. Checked on this forum and they all (most)recommended the braille battery. Ordered on of them (170 shipped) put it on, turn over about 3 times and dead. Jumped it, let it run a while, shut it off and it started back. Put on tender came back couple of days later and tried to start, groundhog day. Turned about 3 times and dead. WTF? Any ideas? I'm second guessing already about getting this dog. Starter? Thanks

Dont Quote me on this but I am sure someone will chime in but Your Battery isnt charging right away. Someone once said it doesnt charge until 2k rpm but dont know if he was just guessing.
And my Pup doesnt like below 30 degrees. I am betting the battery is just weak. What area are you from (the reason I ask) are you riding the dog or too much snow? Take the battery and have it fully charged. My Battery tender takes a long time to fully charge my battery after cold starts and shut down. If you want to use the battery tender do you have it hard wired in or using the clips? Does your tender have a red light on it for charging and green light for fully charged?

Yes and No, Eventually you get a full charge from a Tender but does take much longer than an actual charger. Be careful with a charger as you can overcharge a battery.

You can actually use a tender but it takes a long time. I just charged a new battery for my daughter's quad with one.

Dawg, after you get it started check your voltage on the battery. I forgot what it should be but someone will chime in soon.

I think that if you were to check the battery after you crank it and the bike doesn't start or crank anymore, that you'd find that the battery is not completely dead. :nono: Typically a battery won't die that quick unless it just BAD! And YES new batteries can be bad too. But it does need to be fully charged and kept on a tender. :2thumbs:

Just from what little you've stated here, I'd first start with checking for "all" GOOD battery connections. Opposite ends from the battery, Positive at the starter and Ground at the Tranny I think, if not you'll find it. :up:

But if everything is clean, tight and looks good, then I'd look at the started solenoid contact plate. It may need cleaned or replaced.:up:

After all of that...re-post with findings and symptoms and we'll try again. :up:

just lil info. i charge bike batteries on 2 amp setting. just use tender to keep it up.didnt know tender would charge a battery with low voltage.

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes I have snow and it is in an insulated shop. My tender has green and red light and it is green when I first try it and then goes to red. I am taking the battery to get it tested now. I don't know if this matters but when I jumped it , it wouldn't hardly turn over either. Had to let truck run for a few minutes. After it started, let it run and it started again like I said. I double checked leads connected to battery and re-tightened. If the battery checks out good I will have that solenoid checked. I am not mechanically inclined at all.

I wouldn't be jumping that dog to much like that if I were you. :nono:
That could possibly cause the EHC (Electronic Harness Controller) to go "SOUTH"! :down:

You find the problem, and then it'll crank. :up:
And if it doesn't start, then we'll find that problem as well. :2thumbs:

Jumping the bike off a truck or car battery is a big NO NO!

If you do jump it off a car battery, the car or truck must NOT be running.

If you have to send that battery back, get a Big Boar Battery. It is the most awesome battery I have ever put in a bike. 350CCA as well!

If I am correct the tender should go yellow. The red light is a power supply light.

You are right. It is kind of a orange/yellow. I have never seen the red I don't think

Well, I had already jumped the bike of a truck and it was running and I can't change that I already did that. But for future I will never jump it. The battery tested good so it will not go back. I think its like 426 cca or something. Does anybody have a certain starter they recommend if its bad? Or does anybody have a link for a how to clean that solenoid that they're talking about. Search didn't turn up much

Was the fact that the bike doesnt charge the battery unless at 2K right?

I know if I "Jump start" my chopper I wouldnt have the other vehicle running and only if I was stranded

I had issues starting my Dog yesterday due to I forgot to put it on my battery tender the night before and like i said my Dog hates cold weather. :bang:

But I have the original battery in my 2004 and she cracked up this morning on 2nd crank so I road to work.

Kona, from what you have stated so far the starter is working is it not?
I would ask how the battery was tested? Static or load tested.
Sounds to me that IF the starter is turning over then you either have a weak battery or weak connections.

As for the starter, no telling how old it is but it wouldn't hurt to clean up the contacts show in the "How To" thread you found.

But once you get it figured out and we'll help you all we can you are going to have fun with the bike.

Its hard to ride in the snow but It can be done ask Raywood
