I have a 2006 but you should not have to remove the nut-bolt from the shaft. It should bolt in from the other side.

His is different than your as you got a slammer drive no bolt nor do you have to pull primary cover

To get the bolt out I hold the gear and it will unscrew pretty easy dont forget the locktight and to bend the tab back when you put it back together

engage starter gear (slide forward) into clutch basket (gear) that should hold it with enough force to un-tighten the bolt...works for me :2thumbs:

I tried to slide it in the clutch basket but it still turns.
How do hold the gear without damaging it?

Just wedge a broad flathead screwdriver in there and hold some side force on it. That's how I always do it, you won't damage the gear, it's not fragile.

That worked thanks,I was afraid of damaging the gear.
I was suprised the starter did not have a gasket.
