How to compression release install

going to start the how to install compression release. I am not a pro but hope this helps.
Bike is an 04 pit bull with a wire plus installed.

First remove the gas tank to gain access image.jpegimage.jpeg

You will need the s&s compression tool. I was going to make my own using a deep well socket but a local shop loaned me their tool to use.

The s&s manual calls for removal of the rocker boxes I did not remove the rocker boxes and used painters tape to avoid scratching the chrome. Not a lot of clearance on the rear head.

2. Use a small dab of anti seize on the threads of the new compression release
3. Install compression release finger tight.
4. Notice in pic above.. I tied dental floss around the bottom of the tool . Removing the bottom portion is a pain in the ass.. The dental floss made it easy.
5. Careful not to pinch the wires and insert top portion of the tool.
6. Torque compression releases between 32-37 ft lbs iaw the s&s manual.

I will post more later with pictures and steps now back to work

7. Now route the wires through the heads and down the back bone and install protective sleeve.
8. The replacement compression release came with two black wires according to the s&s manual it states a black And green. Doesn't matter as long as 1runs to ground the other goes to the starter.image.jpeg

9. The replacement compression release wires were too short to run through the backbone so I added a black wire for the ground and a white wire for the green to the starter.image.jpeg

11. Now to test the release uninstall the green wire that connects to the starter to disable the starter from engaging.
12. Install battery and your should hear the compression release lift or you can feel the pin lift when the start button is depressed.

Nice, the hardest part for me was putting the rubber boot over the cr and wires since I didnt take the rocker covers off. Used some di electric grease on inside of boot and worked it on for about 30 min. Still not on perfectly but as good as I could without taking covers off.

No shit, kind of a pain in the ass, I actually cut to small slits in the bottom to get it started.

Yes!!! Thank you for the info. My 2005 Chopper has had this problem for some time (rear compression). I have been putting off the repair thinking the rocker boxes had to be removed.

It can be done , it isn’t the easiest .
Unfortunately, my the rear ended up backing off again. After removing them for the second time pulled the motor and removed the top end. Found that the threads were stripped and took them to a machine shop to repair .
Good luck

Its a bit tricky. They will fit but not with the jst connector attached. I screwed up and thought I was smart by putting the jst on first. Then I tried fishing it thru the head. On the second attempt all went well. The wires will easily slip thru the heads without the jst. A bit of electric tape helps too.
