Way simple job. Easier off the bike, but you should be able to also do it on the bike if you don't have a belt or lines in the way -- your mileage may vary.

OK - first get the starter

The important bit is the three screws on the solenoid. Remove them, but remember there is a spring pushing a shaft in there -- not hard, but remember it.

Here it all is disassembled.

Then it's just clean the contacts on the shaft (copper circle bit) and the EM body (2). and reassemble! Use an emery board or some fine sandpaper -- I use 200 grit. And remember to blow out with some air.

Easy job, give it a shot sometime. Anything that cleans up the electrical connection for the starter is one less problem down the road.

Nice work Chacha (as usual). How many miles did you have on yours at time of cleaning???

LDO :
At ~18K miles, all pretty clean. I think BBC's was more pitted since the Bars are closer in Florida and he has to start his more often. That and the salt-moisture in FL,

BBC - I should have searched before posting -- point taken.

On the 6th pic the two wires at the bottom of the solenoid, mine keep burning in half I can resolder them and it will work fine for awhile then they burn or melt again. This is on my 03 pitbull does anyone have a fix for this besides buying a new starter?? Thanks...C

Camaro - how do your contacts look? Are the wires snapping or is the solder joint failing?

First I've heard of this as a consistent problem - could maybe be an armature short causing a problem, but I'm guessing here....

cha cha contacts are good I've replaced them. Ive had times when the solder joint fails and other times the wire has snapped. You got any ideas what I should check??

I used my Dremil with the flexible extension and a small wire wheel. Worked like a charm and kept the starter on the bike.
